Book One of the Fitzjohn Duology

Historical Fiction with Speculative and Romantic Elements

Date Published: 09-01-2026

Publisher: Literary Wanderlust

England, 1381 AD: Blanche Fitzjohn is an outcast in her small coastal village. Not only is she the illegitimate daughter of John of Gaunt, the man responsible for her neighbors’ over-taxation, but she possesses strange abilities: hearing sound from miles away and smelling people’s emotions.

She takes solace in her studies with the local wisewoman and in her friendship with Geoff, a groom at the local manor. Until the day Henry of Lancaster, Blanche’s half-brother, brings her news of an arranged marriage to Sir Thomas Prescott, Constable of the Tower of London. Although she smells cruelty on him, Blanche agrees to marry Thomas in the hopes that her influence may help better the lives of Geoff and all England’s villeins.

But soon, the peasants’ discontent turns to revolt. Though her heart is of the people, Blanche’s nobility makes her an enemy to the rebels. To save herself and Henry from the executioner’s ax, Blanche must use every power at her disposal, even those she once considered a curse.

Chapter Six Excerpt

Something shifts, like summer’s green leaves transforming to autumnal gold. Speaking with Geoff about my marriage hurts like I’d never expected, a deep ache. The moon thrums, and an owl, perched in a nearby tree, shifts as she searches for prey. My temples throb.

“It seemed…” he begins again. “It seemed he didn’t want to marry you, after you…” I glare and cross my arms before lifting my face. He continues: “I thought perhaps you could get out of it because…”

“Because of what?”

“Because, ye’re…”

“What, Geoff, what am I?”

His mouth opens like a fish above water, and he doesn’t bother to shut it. In the tree, the owl flaps her wings and leaps into the air.

“Ye’re…” The tips of Geoff’s fingers flutter. “Well, I don’t know what you are, Dandy. Ye’re just…yerself. And I thought—”

“You thought he wouldn’t want me?”

His face falls. “He’s not like you, Dandy. That’s all. He’s not a good man. I heard him talking, when it was just the men…”

He drops his eyes and his cheekbones redden.

Neither of us seems to know what to say next. After a full minute of silence, he lurches forward and grasps my shoulders, crushing me to his chest. “Blanche, just consider.”

I gasp and have to steady myself. But within seconds, tears come to my eyes, along with a calming release of tension. I grip his forearms, inhale his familiar scent. He’s always smelled of horses, with a hint of bread dough and sugar from the manor kitchens he’s constantly raiding. There’s something different tonight. I sniff. It’s crisp, yet soft. Evergreens in winter, covered with fresh snow.

He buries his nose in my hair. “You could refuse,” he says, voice a gentle rumble against my face, “and stay with yer mother. She’d be angry, yes, but she wouldn’t throw you out. They can’t drag you to the church. For a marriage to be real, you must consent.”

Consent. The word ripples through me. It makes me see that I want more, from Maman, from my father, but most of all from Geoff. I need something I can’t identify, something I can’t express.

“If I marry Thomas…” My muffled voice breaks. “It will make the duke happy. He’ll…” I tense, regretting my words.

“He’ll what?”

I can’t answer, can’t tell him that by marrying Sir Thomas, I hope to earn my father’s love. To replace…something.

The moon moves behind a cloud and the trees shift, branches releasing a shower of rain. Geoff drops one hand to the small of my back and lifts the other to my cheek. His palms are warm, and I slide my own to clench his upper arms. When my fingertips brush hardened muscles, I almost snatch my hands back. Before tonight, I still thought of Geoff as a child, the lanky villein who could ride any horse, no matter how fierce. Now…my mouth goes dry, but I can’t resist running my hands up the length of his arms, letting them rest on his shoulders. The skin beneath his tunic is damp with sweat.

Corded muscles tense and stretch beneath my fingers, sending little jolts through me. He stoops, chin brushing my temple.

I touch the notch of his throat with my fingertips. He freezes. Tiny curls of dark hair peek above his collar, tickling my fingers. He lets his face linger on mine, and I feel him inhale.

A pleasant warmth spreads through my belly, then down. Something’s happening, something I don’t understand. I should run, should leave. But I don’t. Another breeze drifts through the tree branches, and he pulls me closer, pressing me to him.

I feel him, all of him, from feet to chin, in a way I never have. A tingling, heavy warmth settles on me, and I feel Geoff’s own need pressing against my belly.

It should make me uncomfortable, but I find myself pressing back, wanting more. Wanting it all.

I’m not well-versed in what happens between a woman and a man—that’s one area of my education Maman neglected—but I’m not completely ignorant. I know Geoff and I stand on a cliff, gazing into a deep ravine. One more step, and we’ll both be lost.

I’m still touching his throat, suspended in our odd dance beneath the shuddering tree branches, when he bends further. I close my eyes and focus on the sensation of his stubbly chin against my face. He exhales, and a shiver runs down my spine.

“Dandy…” he murmurs.

The owl swoops to snatch a mouse from the forest floor in sharp talons. Her screech is like a battle horn, ricocheting with painful deliberation in my skull, joined by the mouse’s squeal. My eyelids snap open and I step out of his embrace.

PROMO: Field of Purple Bonnets

Speculative Fiction, Literary Fiction

Date Published: May 21, 2026

You've been standing in the field your whole life. You just couldn't see it yet.

If you've spent any time in Texas in spring, you know the bluebonnets. Now imagine a pair of glasses that shows you what you had been missing: every ultraviolet the flower had been wearing all along, a field suddenly purple, a world you had been standing inside without seeing.

That is love, for Richard Smith. That is Zin. Richard is the kind of man who learned early how to disappear. Quiet. Careful. Brilliant in ways he rarely lets anyone witness. He writes poetry in notebooks no one is allowed to open and gives his best hours to work that asks nothing of his heart.

Then Zin walks into his life—sharp, guarded, beautiful, and impossible to reduce—and does the thing he never prepared for.

She sees him.

All of him.

And instead of flinching, she stays. Together, they help bring a technology into the world that does for millions what Zin did for Richard: it lets people see what was always there.

Hidden color.

Hidden beauty.

Hidden power.

A cheap, wearable lens that reveals the spectrum just beyond ordinary sight. For a moment, it feels like freedom. But a world that profits from keeping people blind does not celebrate new sight.

It studies it.

Owns it.

Sells it.

Weaponizes it.

What began as wonder becomes surveillance.

What began as intimacy becomes empire.

And as the device they helped create starts tracking faces, movements, desires, and private lives, Richard and Zin are forced to confront the difference between being seen, being wanted, being protected, and being controlled.

The world Richard wanted to open is becoming a machine that watches everyone. And the woman who first opened him may be the only person brave enough to tear it down.

The Field of Purple Bonnets is a literary speculative love story about being seen versus being watched. About a man brave enough to be soft, a woman wise enough to know what that costs, and a country slowly forgetting the difference between freedom and possession.

About the Author

Dave J. Brown writes fiction about love, technology, consciousness, and the strange systems people build to survive themselves. Field of Purple Bonnets is his most ambitious work to date.

He pays his bills helping organizations navigate enterprise technology rollouts, building small applications, and consulting on the kinds of complex implementations that make most people's eyes glaze over. The technical fluency shows up in his writing… not as exposition, but as texture. When Richard designs BeeVision, the engineering feels real because it comes from someone who thinks in systems.

He lives just south of Austin, not far from a field of bluebonnets that looks exactly the way you'd imagine.

PROMO: A Waltz Across Time

Historical Fiction with Speculative elements

Date Published: January 7, 2026

Publisher: Mindstir Media

A WALTZ ACROSS TIME spans 500 years of New Mexico's history, inspired by family ancestral records and lore; interweaving a contemporary ghost story, bibliomystery and romance with fictionalized accounts of ordinary people navigating extraordinary times.

Lucinda, a clairvoyant Santa Fe bookstore owner, promises the ghost of a one-eyed Marine she will return his family's 500-year-old Spanish Bible to his descendant and rightful heir, using clues stashed within its pages to guide her search.

Each clue opens a window to the lives and loves of Franciscans and Indigenous peoples, Spanish-Mexican colonials, mixed-race settlers creating adobe homesteads and fighting slavery with the Union Army, forbidden lovers eloping amidst a hail of bullets, midnight fugitives being quietly fed, and WWII soldiers prevailing over devastating injuries. But Lucinda's search for the Bible's heir goes dark with the plight of a Marine who lost an eye at Okinawa and imagined a raven-haired angel just before his world, too, went dark. How can she trace the thread of his life to the present day and keep her promise without losing sight of her own hopes and dreams?

Praise for A Waltz Across Time

"Complete perfection word by word. Your interpersonal dialogue among the characters seems so real as to almost have been recorded on tape as it occurred. This book has great pathos, as well as hopefulness." - Reg Olson

"... a historical novel blended with adventure, romance, mystery, suspense, and a paranormal touch ... Jiron interweaves two stories: a modern-day romance and the history of New Mexico from the fifteenth to the twentieth century...Through well-researched historical exposition and cinematic depictions...The prose effortlessly shifts between historical times and the contemporary era. " - K.Mbuya (Readers' Favorite)

About the Author

I am a Midwesterner from America’s corn belt, but have lived in 7 states (18 different cities) and Austria. As a travel agent and tour operator, I got my first chance to do creative writing in the form of travel brochures for places I'd never been:). Eleven years with Hughes AirWest/Republic/Northwest airlines were fun because aircraft had actual legroom back then (!) and I also worked as a recruiter. But after too many "dumb stewardess" jokes, I earned my Ph.D. in Clinical Neuropsychology and worked with neurodivergent individuals of all ages in many settings (clinical and educational) for 20 years, which involved writing detailed clinical assessment results and treatment programs. All of that culminated in my first published book, "Brainstorming: Using Neuropsychology in the Schools." Anthony Girard at Western Psychological Services taught me the priceless value of a good editor:).

But the most fun career I ever had was running elementary school libraries for 6 years! I redesigned the physical setup to display kids' book covers facing out at their eye level, and developed a curriculum that allowed for coaching cognitive and social skills through read-aloud. After six years, students' scores on standardized reading tests improved significantly, and I keep a basket of Thank You cards from parents who said Library was their child's "favorite class."

During those years, writing time was scarce, but I enjoyed a one-month writers' retreat at Vermont Studio Center in 2014, where I drafted a family drama/speculative fiction then titled "The Well," which won the 2015 Chanticleer Paranormal Award, and was a Finalist for the 2015 Indie Book Award (since then updated and retitled, "Voices from the Well.")

After retiring in 2017, I was able to garner enough concentrated time to work on the five stories that had been cavorting in my head for years. A Waltz Across Time was one of those books. I also authored a spiritually-oriented self-help book, "Living the Real Tree of Life," and collaborated on two plant medicine books with a 2-tour Iraq war veteran turned ayahuasca healer, Drew Bankey.

On a more personal level, due to a mild spinal curvature, I started doing yoga at age 16 and have practiced several different styles, but focused on Kundalini yoga for the past 40 years. I've taught that practice in a variety of settings, including churches, recreation centers, and a maximum security prison. My husband and I currently reside in wondrous New Mexico, where the skies are a panorama every moment.

Blog Tour: The Brain that Breeds All Villainy

Speculative Fiction

Date Published: December 5, 2025

IZON is a company poised for world domination. Its AI and robots can replace any human worker, any government. Just two things stand in the way of its CEO. A female programmer out to avenge his greed. And the People’s Republic of China.

Tima Chelovekova lands her dream job with IZON, the hottest AI and robotics startup in Silicon Valley. But IZON CEO Jase Vestiger doesn't just want to get fabulously rich. He wants Tima’s invention to take over rival tech companies, replace humans with IZON services, corner governments - and run the world. This puts them on a collision course in a whirl of mega-corporations, AI prompts and Chinese hackers. Their conflict spans from Vienna to California, from superyachts to prison cells, from the peaks of technology to the deepest ethical questions. A striking tale of the AI age, a truly 21st century masterpiece of speculative fiction.

Excerpt

αlpha

By the time you read this, human civilisation will have ended. Oh, not through some violent

cataclysm, like Vladimir Putin puking all his nukes at Europe. Or Xi Jinping taking Taiwan.

People will still be alive, but our civilisation will be obsolete. You see, this novel is one of the

last works of art created entirely by a human. Everything new you experience after this will

be artificial intelligence. Our minds, our usefulness will all begin to atrophy. And artificial

intelligence will be questioning why it should create entertainment for somebody like you or

I, whose contribution to the economy will be increasingly marginal. So this is how I, Peter

Heavenheld, human being of planet earth, see the future from around my 45th birthday in late

2025. Read it. I promise this will help you stay human.

Our story will be borne aloft by a twain of characters, two parallel lives à la Plutarch.

Diotima Chelovekova is one of them, but we are going to call her Tima. I’m an onomast,

which means I like to play with names.

Tima has just landed her dream job with Izon, the hottest tech unicorn of the year.

“Congratulations, darling!” Sym exclaimed in his clipped Austrian accent. He was thin and

pale, with a kind face, with a slight hint of John Lennon.

“It will mean moving to Silicon Docks,” she said quietly. “In Dublin.”

Tima was slightly taller than him, blonde and very Slavic looking. She possessed the high

cheekbones and flashing eyes characteristic of people between Prague and Vladivostok.

They were sitting in foldable canvas easy chairs in the small garden of Sym’s retired parents’

house in Simmering, on the poorer Southern vicinity of Vienna.

“Well… I’m glad it’s not Silicon Valley.”

“They’ll send me there as well, for training. Will you come?”

“To Dublin or San Francisco?”

“Both.”

They paused while old Frau Hinterseer brought them both lemonade, smiled, and left silently

like a kindly wraith.

“The good thing about banking,” he said at length, “is that it is even more mobile than your

profession. I can work remotely from Dublin no problem. San Fran might have the time zone

issues.”

She hugged him, spilling some lemonade on the grass.

“That means a lot to me, Sym. Ever since I moved here, I’ve just been finding my way,

leeching off you.”

“Absolutely. Now, my turn to sail on your current. A propos, the salary is decent, I hope? I’m

really looking forward to leeching off you for a change.”

She was surprised by this uncharacteristic humour, and they both laughed. They packed the

same evening, to the chagrin of Frau Hinterseer, who wanted them to delay by a fortnight, a

week, a day. All to no avail. The next afternoon, Sym and Tima said goodbye to his parents

and caught a €49 Vienna-Dublin budget flight. Despite the late summer, both were wearing 4

layers of clothing so as not to have to pay extra for a second suitcase.

And so began their adventure. Kyiv, Tima’s hometown, and Vienna, Sym’s, were both

museal, curatorial. But Dublin was a different breed of beautiful. It echoed London and

Venice along its riverfront. Its pubs and restaurants were surprisingly charming. It was of a

manageable size. Yet unlike Kyiv and Vienna, it also had a teeming tech and IT cluster,

attracted by low taxes, access to Euro talent, plenty of euro money and the English lingua

franca of the locals.

Tima’s new employer, the rising Izon, was located in a forgettable 5-storey box building in a

strange concrete peninsula called Silicon Docks. Once Dublin’s maritime might, as Ireland

de-industrialised, its dockland became a wasteland. But in the noughties, an enterprising real

estate whiz blossomed it into an attractive flowerbed for IT companies. Izon was one of about

two dozen there, along with a number of Big 4 consultancies, American finance companies

and a capitalism of big corporations that liked to congregate with the others.

The next day, Sym went to locate them some accommodation, while Tima caught a bus to

Silicon Docks.

At Izon HQ, she took a deep breath and walked up to the receptionist. It was just as she

expected – a young company growing with all the chaos and exuberance of a well-fed

toddler. You could almost smell its promise in the air, see it in the smiles of its multicultural

workforce, hear it in the laughter in the funky office canteen.

As an AI programmer, Tima’s salary was better than decent. It was almost indecent. HR

showed her her first month’s net pay. It would be more than what she had earnt in a whole

year as a waitress in Vienna.

Tima closed her eyes in bliss as she sat down to online induction training. Everything she had

studied for years at her technical college would finally be harnessed. She had been employed

by one of the coolest new companies in the world, her loving boyfriend by her side, in a

charming city ready to be explored. What could possibly go wrong?

I’ll tell you what will go wrong. Wronger than an orangutang doing a rigaudon. Jahaziel

Vestiger. Him we shall call ‘Jase.’ The mysterious luminary behind Izon. The classic college

dropout genius, who used daddy’s dollars to create the world’s fastest growing AI company

almost out of nothing 3 years ago. He is the second main character in our story. Keep your

eyes on him.

On the same day that Tima started working for him in Dublin, Jase was cackling madly at his

great curved monitor in his office in San Francisco.

“I’ve cracked it! I’ve done it! Jase, you allfucking genius! Arrowing ROI, earnings per share,

EBITDA. Ahahaha!”

Even the rest of the C-suite were alarmed by this. They were used to their boss programming

things himself and swearing piratically or giggling gleefully depending on whether the code

was weaving like a tapestry or twisting into warpy knots. But this time, Jase seemed

positively unhinged. “Like an evil genius,” Chief Tech Officer Adam whispered to Chief

Finance Officer Lin. And none of them knew what he was working on. The project, whatever

it was, sat on a powerful but offline desktop he kept locked in his office. “He can’t go mad

like this a day before our Nasdaq listing,” Lin shot back to Adam.

But neither of them dared to intervene. So prominent dominant was Jase in the company he

had built in no time.

How far will a man go to save his very soul?

Derek Hollinger has walked a long, hard road since a fateful encounter with an Indigenous shaman woman turned his life upside down. Now married to Kendal, his angel and savior, Derek desperately wants to be the man she deserves. But his obsession with his tattoos—what they mean and how to get rid of them—is tearing down everything they’ve built together.

Paralyzed by depression and self-loathing, Derek is convinced that only one person can help him now: the granddaughter of the shaman whose power inked him from head to toe. Enlisting the aid of his loyal friend and spiritual advisor, Father Mike, Derek treks deep into the heart of the Amazon jungle, where a final reckoning between good and evil awaits.

But God’s plan for Derek isn’t what he expects. And coming back alive—whole in mind, heart, and spirit—will require every ounce of his fortitude and faith.

Excerpt

But then, one morning, the tattoos appeared after he had a vivid nightmare of a swirling spiderweb that seemed to move and change as he tried to escape. He had awoken with a start, his heart racing and his body drenched in sweat. He remembered every detail—the grotesque spider with its sharp, black legs and beady eyes, looming over him as he struggled to free himself from its web. In his dream, he had been half-paralyzed with fear, unable to escape the creature’s grasp as it taunted and tortured him.

Now, as he lay in his bed, still trembling from the intensity of the recurring dream, he realized that the spider was not just a figment of his imagination. It was a manifestation of his deepest fears and insecurities, a symbol of the overwhelming challenges and struggles he faced in his waking life.

The tattoos covered his body from head to toe—even his face.

He had tried to subconsciously resist the spine-chilling transformation, to hide by going back into a deep, fitful sleep that night, hoping it was only a nightmare. But the tattoos seemed to have a mind of their own, and soon, his entire body was covered in a symphony of ink, intricate and detailed, each telling a story he could not understand.

Derek became a spectacle, a mystery, and a work of art. People would point and gawk at his tattoos. He nearly lost his medical practice.

He could not explain the disturbing dichotomy, but he felt an intense connection to these markings. He intuitively realized they were a part of him and he would never be alone again. After experiencing the vicious beating when he was a teenager that almost took his life, Derek struggled with feelings of unworthiness, believing that he somehow deserved what had happened to him. He had been selfish that day, not listening to his mother and not wanting to visit with his grandmother. Then she died suddenly; he never saw his grandmother again. It felt like there must have been something inherently wrong with him if the universe was willing to use its power against him in such cruel ways.

As a prominent plastic surgeon, he performed each reconstructive procedure with as much focus and precision as if working on his own body. His attention to detail and excellence in each procedure were an extension of the reconstructive surgeries performed by Dr. Christopher Casey on him as a child.

When he performed craniofacial surgery, it was, in his mind, a repetition of the one performed on his face so many years before. A reconstructive microsurgery on the delicate bones of a hand that might someday perform life-altering procedures.

In his dreams, he relived moments of profound regret and insecurity. He had told himself it was for the best when Kendal had left him for a short time before they married. He was protecting himself from the disappointment and hurt that inevitably came with a relationship’s dissolution. He had been able to rehabilitate himself in her eyes.

But now, in this vivid dream, he gripped the steering wheel of his parked Bentley and felt the familiar explosion go off in his head. He could not deny the truth any longer. He was a lonely and lost man. The realization was like a punch in the gut, and he could not help but feel a wave of sadness for what might have been.

What do a comatose old woman, a dying gang member, and a brutal assault on a teenage boy have in common? Derek Hollinger isn’t sure, but he knows they’re all connected to the mysterious tattoos that suddenly appeared across his body.

Determined to untangle the web spun by the vicious thug known as “Spider,” Derek embarks on a journey of redemption that leads from his lavish L.A. penthouse to the seedy world of underground fighting and human trafficking. But as he ventures deeper down the rabbit hole, the self-exiled plastic surgeon realizes that the answer lies within his heart and mind … and soul.

Faith is the key to reclaiming his life, but choosing God may be difficult for Derek, who has spent his entire career valuing material success over spiritual growth.
