The Tale of Ol' Split Toe

Action and Adventure Fantasy for teens

Date Published: 03-31-2026

Narrator: Dan Ellens

Run Time: 10 hours 6 minutes

Mother Nature struggles to maintain equilibrium in a changing world while fire, disease, logging, human displacement, and war repeatedly destroy forests of centuries-old trees. Split Toe, a deer chosen at birth for a unique education, travels through time to understand the interconnected workings of a Michigan forest. He meets humans along the way: Ice Age hunters who trap and kill a mastodon; Mukwoh, a young Ojibwe hunter who stalks Split Toe through swamp and forest; loggers clearcutting Michigan’s white pines; Edra, a woman advocating for the trees; Angus and Grace, pioneers who become a first generation of family farmers; scientists from the future studying the impact of nuclear radiation.

Split Toe witnesses two hundred years of conflict building between modern humans -- who fight to control the natural world -- and Mother Nature, who repeatedly reaches for balance. He wonders whether human ways will ultimately overpower Mother Nature, until he meets a boy who changes everything.

Forest Legend: The Tale of Ol’ Split Toe is an adventure that sweeps through time from the Ice Age into the future to tell the story of ecological change to our forests from Nature’s point of view; through the eyes of a time-traveling deer – Ol’ Split Toe. The story takes place in Michigan.  Split Toe is a deer born during an eclipse and chosen by spirits of nature for a special education – to understand the intricate inner-workings of a forest. Split Toe travels through time for his lessons.

The story begins in 1409 AD with a young Ojibwe hunter pursuing Split Toe through a tag alder swamp and Michigan’s white pines forest. Action, suspense, and close calls lace the adventure. Split Toe time traveles to the Ice Age, where he sees soil forming for the first time. He recognizes it as the birth place of the forest – Split Toe’s lesson. But Split Toe also has an Ice Age encounter with a mastodon and is chased by dire wolves back through the time portal, and into Michigan’s logging era, with modern humans clear cutting the white pines that were his once his home.

Split Toe steps through time, engaging in the pioneer era, the family farm era, the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918, the time when infrastructure is added to Michigan’s rural and agricultural land. Roads straighten and improve. Ditches and power lines follow roads. Split Toe sees the human view of land use and ownership change. He sees the rise of the corporate farm. He sees civilization encroaching on wild places. Through it all, Split Toe observes humans and tries to understand how they fit in the natural order of things. Split Toe watches humans try to control everything about the world around them.  He also understands that Mother Nature reacts to everything happening by steadfastly reaching for balance. Split Toe wonders if humans will overtake Mother Nature. He needs to find out.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I never really ‘wanted’ to be a writer.  I simply evolved into one. Now I write to connect people with nature – books and a blog. I write because I have things I want to write about. My first book, Turning Ten: Great Adventures in the Great Lakes came out in 2000. Forest Legend: The Tale of Ol’ Split Toe is my fifth book and my debut into the world of fiction.

Have you published any previous books?

There are five books in my back trail:

·        Turning Ten: The Tale of Ol’ Split Toe (2000)

·        A Time for India (2006)

·        Building the Bunkee: A Photo Anthology of Custom Log Cabin Construction and One Man’s Retirement Dream (2021)

·        Treehouse Letters: The Unabridged Michigan Forest Life Journal (2022)

·        Forest Legend: The Tale of Ol’ Split Toe (2026)

What can we expect to see from you in the future, any books on the backburner?

I have a number of book ideas that I am not ready to discuss. Right now I am using all of my energy to introduce Forest Legend.

Meanwhile, I still write the Michigan Forest Life blog when I am at my treehouse in Winterfield Pines Nature Sanctuary. Later this summer I hope to launch a series of YouTube videos with me reading short excerpts from Forest Legend.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

When I am not writing or talking to groups about Forest Legend, I am caretaker of Winterfield Pines Nature Sanctuary in Clare County, Michigan. I live half time in an off-grid, electricity-free treehouse with woodstove heat, handpump water, and oil lamp lighting. I spend quite a bit of time maintain trails, setting up a guest log cabin, and preparing for off-grid winter life. It is a charming lifestyle that inspires me.

I also cherish my family time with my spouse, adult children, and grandchildren.

Did you learn anything from writing your book? What was it?

I learned a writing project does not reach its true potential without feedback. Writing always benefits from constructive observations. But an author needs to be receptive to feedback. It is up to the author to use the feedback to improve the written product.

I also learned that writing the book is the easy part. Finding a publisher and promoting the book can take more time and effort than the writing. It can be an intense slogs for the author. Persistence is the most important thing to reach a conclusion.

Some writers have something playing in the background, do you and what?

I am often in the forest when writing, in a treehouse without electricity. I open the windows and listen to the sounds of the forest – birds, insects, frogs, squirrels chattering, wind in the trees, and the heartbeat of my cuckoo clock. It is nature’s symphony

Tell us a little about yourself. Perhaps something not many people know about?

Since retiring from a full career in industry, I am really leaning into my relationship with nature. My home is in a rural setting, but I leave it often to spend a few days in the forest. About half my time each year is spent in the wilderness.

I am an amateur artist. I am also passionate about rescuing abandoned fine art, restoring it when necessary, and finding a respectful new home for each piece.

What do you hope your writing brings to your readers?

I write books to connect people with nature. I hope readers go away with that. I hope they feel the natural connection. Smell it. See it. Taste it. I hope Forest Legend makes them think about their own place in the natural order of things. I hope as they read the adventure, a better understanding of the whole life of a forest rubs off, and when they turn the last page, the story sticks with them.

About the Author

Dan Ellens is an outdoor enthusiast who is passionate about connecting people with nature.

He spends nearly half of each year off-grid in an isolated, hand-built, electricity-free treehouse nestled within Winterfield Pines Nature Sanctuary with woodstove heat, handpump water, and oil lamp lighting.

Dan was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and grew up in southeast Michigan. He has a Mechanical Engineering degree from Calvin University and an MBA from Michigan State University. Dan is retired from a full career in industry and international business.

During 1996, 1997, and 1998, his family lived as expatriates in Bangalore, India, the inspiration for “A Time for India”, Dan’s second book, now in its second edition.

When Dan’s children were small – 10 years old - he took them each on an outward-bound, father-child adventure. The journal of those four trips became Dan’s first book, “Turning Ten: Great Adventures in the Great Lakes”, now in its second edition.

Dan is an accomplished woodworker and carpenter. His lifelong love for old-school carpentry inspired “Building the Bunkee: A Photo Anthology of Custom Log Cabin Construction and One Man’s Retirement Dream”. Dan is a hobby artist who is passionate about rescuing, restoring, and finding new homes for fine art. In the wilds, he sees cooking and baking without modern conveniences as their own adventure and creative expression. “Treehouse Letters: The Unabridged Michigan Forest Life Journal” includes entries about his art and his back-woods cooking … and many other things that one might think about while in a tree.

“Forest Legend: The Tale of Ol’ Split Toe”, Dan’s upcoming novel – his debut fiction piece written while sitting in his treehouse nest - brings experience from decades of life in the forest together with a rich understanding of mid-Michigan’s pioneer history and changing landscape. In this sweeping adventure, Dan explores the resilience of nature through the eyes of a majestic, time-traveling deer.

Blog Tour: No Matter What

Young Adult / Coming of Age / Christian

Date Published: April 14, 2026

Publisher: Clay Bridges Press

Most people don’t know quite what to make of Jay McGee. His teammates call him “Mac Daddy” ('90s slang for a smooth-talking ladies' man). But Jay is nothing like that. In fact, he just doesn’t fit neatly into any box—honors student, basketball player, church kid—and he’s okay with that, as long as two people notice: Coach Mays, the fiery perfectionist standing between Jay and his basketball dreams, and Nicole Ellis, the cheerleader he’s secretly liked since sixth grade.

When Jay finally seizes a moment of boldness with Nicole, he steps into new territory—only to discover her life is far more complicated than he ever imagined. Maybe he should just focus on basketball. Except Coach Mays seems blind to Jay’s potential, harping only on his flaws.

Caught between pressure, failure, and secrets no one talks about at Sunday school, Jay is forced to wrestle with deeper questions—about who he is, what he believes, and what it really means to be seen, to love, and to become someone worth noticing . . . no matter what.

What makes it unique:

This book provides a practical way for teens to engage with difficult questions and feel seen in the struggles they’re facing, while also being educational and presenting hard truths everyone will have to wrestle with. It helps the reader ask tough questions about who they are, who they want to be, where they want to go in life, and who they want to bring along on the journey.

The engaging characters and witty conversation pull in the reader and command attention and focus. This is not a story that will be read and quickly forgotten. Unlike generic "coming of age" books, No Matter What tackles the struggles of adolescence with taste and decency, allowing the reader to think and feel throughout the story without becoming unnecessarily uncomfortable or awkward.

Excerpt

We threw out and discussed a few more names, but my mind started to wander back to who I really liked. I got quiet for a few moments, then looked at John and asked, “What do you think about… Nicole Ellis?”

“She was my neighbor when I was in kindergarten through third grade, so I used to know her really well,” John replied. “She moved to a new house with her mom after her parents got divorced and switched elementary schools. I haven’t been around her much since we’ve been going to the same school again.”

Now I had to decide whether to play her off as just another name or to reveal what I was really feeling. “Well,” I stammered, “I’ve had a lot of classes with her the last couple of years. I think she’s pretty, um…” I gulped. “Solid.”

John stared out the window as he spoke, using the same tone he had for the last few names we brought out. “Yeah, she’s smart. And I think every guy has liked her at some point. I think that she’s…”

Our eyes finally met and he stopped. Suddenly he knew that she wasn’t just another name I was tossing out. I was breaking out of theory and the hypothetical and getting real. I averted my eyes and chuckled nervously.

After a few moments of awkward silence, John grinned. “So Nicole Ellis, huh? How long has this been going on?”

“Um, to tell you the truth,” I confessed, “probably most of the last five years. Especially the last year or so, since we’ve been in classes so much together.” Even though we’d never opened up about this type of thing before, I was sort of embarrassed my best friend didn’t know about something that had been weighing so heavily on my heart for so long.

John didn’t seem offended, just thoughtful. “I hear she’s a good girl,” he said, finally nodding his head in approval. “Kat still knows her pretty well. I don’t think she’s a big partier. She’s dated a few different guys, but she hasn’t gotten too serious with any of them.”

A feeling of relief came over me. Relief from getting this out to someone other than just Roger, from having John’s endorsement, and, I had to admit, from hearing a report on what she was like outside of school, something I realized in that moment I knew nothing about.

Relief turned into an outpouring of words. The dam of privacy and pride had been breached, and I told John everything—the first meeting in the cafeteria line, the way her smile made me feel then and now, how she had been kind to me when I still had my glasses, and how laughing with her in class was the highlight of my day. (I stopped short of telling him about the Letter, though. I was still trying to convince myself that it never happened.)

As I finished with all this gushing, all John could do was smile, but he wasn’t making fun of me. “Wow, you’ve really got it bad,” he said, shaking his head. “I don’t know what to tell you.”

One thing that made John a good friend is that he would never leave me hanging. I had opened up my heart to him, and, as hard as it was for him, he wasn’t going to leave me out there alone in my vulnerability. His eyebrows suddenly lowered as he looked down, deep in thought.

“Do you remember Rachel Mathis?” he asked. Sure, I remembered Rachel. She started attending my old church, where John still went, right before my family switched.

“The soccer player? Does she still go to Memorial Baptist?” Rachel was about an inch shorter than John, well-built and athletic, with light brown hair in tight curls cut just above her shoulders.  I thought she was cute when I met her, but I hadn’t gotten a chance to get to know her.

“Yeah, she still goes most of the time.” John was back to mumbling through his teeth. “I tutored her in math a little bit last spring. She had a boyfriend at the time, and it kind of pissed him off. Nothing was going on, but it did help me to get to know her better.”

“So are you telling me you like her?”

John let out an exasperated sigh, fighting to open up and admit to me—and maybe to himself—for the first time that he really did like someone. “I mean, yeah, I guess. She works hard, stays in shape, gets good grades, and we go to church together. She smiles at me a lot, but it never seems like she’s smiling about how quiet I am or anything. And, uh…” (for some reason this last part seemed to pain him to most to say out loud) “I like her hair.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. Then he started laughing, too. It was the kind of cathartic laugh that only two best friends who understood the unspoken context around a situation could have. We were awkward and we were clueless, but we knew we were safe with each other.

Excerpt

“Why are you always spoiling things? Why couldn’t you have just believed me?”

Then the girl charged toward her, rage in her eyes. Marion had seen this before – it was the bully on the playground, the mean girl at the gym – why are you making me do this??

And suddenly Marion knew that she was fighting for her life. Swinging the flashlight she connected it with Dei’s upper arm, unbalancing her, if only for a moment. As Dei staggered back, Marion glanced at the front door and knew that she would never make it in time. Instead, she headed for the balcony and tugged the glass door open with all her might. At once, the rain whipped against her face, stinging like shards of glass, but she knew that Dei could feel it too.

And then she began to scream. After all, they were only one floor up from the boardwalk. Surely someone would see them struggling!

But there was no one there. It was as if Naples had become a ghost town. There was nothing but abandoned cars and boarded up windows – and rising water.

A tiny, claw-like hand grabbed at her arm and twisted, but she wrenched free. With Marion’s clothing soaked, it was harder for Dei to hold onto her, but she stepped all the way out onto the concrete patio, now slick with rain.

            “You bitch!”

Marion heard Dei scream behind her and turned to face her abuser but before she could raise the heavy flashlight again, it slipped from her wet grip and clattered to the floor.

Seeing it fall, Dei kicked the flashlight under one of the chairs and then lunged at Marion.  Grabbing her by the hair she was surprised to feel the old woman fighting back. They were both soaked, their bodies slick with rain and debris carried in by the fierce wind.

Suddenly one of the chairs slammed into Dei, hitting her back legs, and she lost her hold on Marion. As Dei staggered back, Marion moved toward the door, intending to lock her out, but Dei caught her by the wrist.

“No, you don’t!” she said fiercely, propelling Marion towards the rail of the balcony.  For one terrifying moment, Marion feared that she would lose her balance and pitch forward over the ledge to the street below. Instead, her core held -- and years of yoga and gardening paid off in that moment, saving her life.

Pushing herself away from the railing, Marion saw Dei rushing toward her like a linebacker. She had youth and energy and agility, but Marion had one thing Dei didn’t have in that moment – her wits.

As Dei charged towards the railing, Marion waited until the last millisecond and then stepped aside - the impact to Dei enough to knock the wind out of her. Falling to her knees, she was now doubled over beside Marion, if only for a moment.

But that moment was all that it took for Marion to see the iPhone sticking out of the pocket of Dei’s jeans. Adrenaline surged through Marion as her right hand connected with the phone, and in one sweeping movement, she took it and flung it over the balcony to the flooded street below.

FOREST LEGEND: THE TALE OF OL’ SPLIT TOE

Chapter 5 – The Sacred Circle – AD1409

And here, within the ancient circle, the barrier between the physical world and the spirit pool was thin. He could hear them now, whispering to each other in the wind.

Waawaashkeshi breathed deeply, looked up into the tree foliage, and asked the spirits the question that was weighing on him.

“Was that really necessary? The hungry cougar? The human stalking me? This flea? The problem at the river? I nearly broke my neck. It is still sore.”

Waawaashkeshi stretched his neck upward and to the side in a circular motion, lifting his chin. He was speaking to himself. Listening for an answer that would come from within.

“Am I not a chosen deer? Why do you not protect me from such things?”

The spirit’s answer seemed to whisper through his mind like wind through the leaves.

“Waawaashkeshi, you know that physically, you are an ordinary deer. You learn from experience as any other living thing learns from experience. You are as big and strong as your kind can be. Your chances of survival are better than other deer because of your strength and the wisdom you’ve gained from your experiences. Your adversaries are mighty, which will only make you stronger … if you survive. Your judgment grows, like a river fed by many streams. You would never be able to understand what you must learn if you were not an ordinary deer who faces real suffering. You are not protected from the natural trials of life because trials are a part of life. Do you think you could understand the strength of the river without such a crossing? Do you think you would have found out about the living soil if you had not crossed the river? Knowing such things is important. Your experiences will guide you in the future. They will help you understand the natural world, the forest, and its inhabitants. They will help you survive. These are your lessons.”

Amanda lurched down the hall, flapping her arms like a pelican trying to dry her armpits, and flew past the locker area and into her homeroom class. As sunshine streamed through open windows, she hoped a breeze reached her soon.
She shrank down when she got into her seat, the last desk in the middle row of five. Head and shoulders taller than most students and twice as wide, she preferred the back. That was better than hearing, “Amanda scrunch down so I can see,” or “Amanda, could you move a bit to the left?” and other—not so nice—comments.
When the bell rang, she punched out her left arm. “Yay! I made it on time.”
“Watch it,” Charlie Piggott said in the row to her left. His blue eyes widened. “Almost got me that time.”
“Sorry.” Amanda grimaced. “Really.”
“It’s okay. Better luck next time.”
“Huh?”
“To hit your target.”
She frowned. “I don’t want to hit you.”
He broke out in a grin. “Amanda, I’m just kiddin’ ya.”
Amanda grinned back. “You’re a pal.” After she dragged her science stuff from the book bag, she kicked the bag under the desk. Tucking her thatch of brown hair behind her ears, she wiped sweat from her forehead and closed her eyes to slow her breathing. She sensed the noise and chatter fading away…
“Before you get too settled, Amanda.” Miss Holter’s voice pierced through Amanda’s mist of serenity. “Please close the door.”
Amanda scrambled to her feet, smacking her thighs against the desk. “Ow!” She gritted her teeth and lumbered to the door.
As she started to close it, Miss Holter said, “Then come to the front of the class.”
Amanda jerked, slamming the door.
“Uh Oh’s” escaped from several students as heads swiveled toward her.
Confused, Amanda stumbled over a bookbag on her way to the front, mumbling, “One more thing and I’m going to scream.”
Standing beside Miss Holter made Amanda feel almost petite.
When the teacher turned, she whispered to Amanda, “Go ahead and sit in the chair there beside my desk.”
Amanda glimpsed the corners of her teacher’s mouth turn up ever so slightly and wondered what she wanted. If I’m not in trouble, why am I here? Miss Holter, her favorite teacher, had never done anything to embarrass her before.
The teacher motioned for their full attention. “In faculty meeting this morning, Principal Primson announced we’re having a carnival fundraiser. The sixth grade will be putting on the event. A student representative will help organize the students as we work on the carnival. The four homeroom teachers each nominated one student who must accomplish three challenges.”
“Sounds like too much work,” Mark Nelson said, scrunching his face.
The teacher nodded. “It will be. But a student with real leadership potential should not find the challenges too difficult. The tasks may even be invigorating for him or her.”
A zing of excitement crept up Amanda’s spine.
The teacher crossed her arms with a smug look. “My nominee—no, pardon me—our section 6B nominee is the very best.”
