PROLOGUE
Milton, Massachusetts: June 1, 2003
A bright afternoon sun beamed down on
Milton Academy as the Class of 2003 graduation ceremony drew to a close.
Parents and grandparents waded frantically between metal folding chairs,
scrambling to organize family photographs. Through the commotion, two of
Milton’s top students found a quiet moment under a sprawling oak to reflect on
their boarding school experience and say their goodbyes.
They had begun their time at Milton as
total strangers but quickly became the best of friends.
Along with a love of American history,
they enjoyed competitive sports, beer pong, and dating coeds. The two young men
shook hands under the tree and promised to stay in touch. Both were heading to
top military schools, and each had a deeply personal reason for wanting to
serve their country. James Francis Keenan was off to the United States Naval
Academy. His roommate, Jiang Peng, was heading home to Beijing, to attend the
People’s Liberation Army National Defense School.
As the elated graduates and their
exhausted families departed the day’s ceremonies, they strolled beneath the
school’s original stone archway inscribed with the Academy’s motto: Dare to Be True. The motto dated back to 1898. No one could
have imagined that the survival of the free world would someday depend on it.
