PROMO: Cicero James, Miracle Worker

Urban Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, New Adult / Adult Fantasy

Date Published: October 28, 2024

My name is Cicero James, and I died last Thursday.

I know how it sounds, and the rest of what I have to tell you is just going to make it worse. But it's true. I died, and I came back. And the rest of it—why it happened, what it means, and most importantly what we’re going to have to do about it—is what I need you to hear.

I’m going to start at the beginning, and I’m going to tell all of this as faithfully as possible. I’m going to try to bring you along for the ride. It’s all coming out in a rush, so if I don’t tell it quite right, or if I muff a word or use bad grammar or something, try not to hold it against me.

And if I don’t manage to convince you… I understand. No harm, no foul, no hard feelings. This is all insane to anyone who hasn't lived it.

But if you're in, then you’re in, and here we go.

PROMO: Innocent & Sweet

Contemporary New Adult Romance

Date Published: June 20, 2025

Anissa Dunn wants one man -- Kameron. He’s got looks, brains and a boatload of attitude… and all that muscle. A girl can only take so much, and he's her heart's desire. She’s not afraid to give as good as she gets and she wants him to be her teacher in all things carnal.

There's only one catch -- he's her bodyguard and the rules state she can't date the staff.

But rules are meant to be broken…

EXCERPT

I will make him notice me. Anissa adjusted her dress. The cherry-red halter frock hung on her thin frame. So much for the correct fit. She sighed. No matter what she did, she couldn't put on weight. She debated what to add to improve her figure. If she wore the leather jacket, she'd appear edgy. The clunky boots helped increase her height, so she was fine there. But her bust... drat. She peered down at her chest. A wave of nausea hit her as she thought about her dating past. Guys didn't want to date a woman with a flat chest -- or so they'd told her.

She spied the gel bra cups she'd bought during her last trip to the fabric store. If she had boobs, maybe the guy of her dreams would finally notice her. He had to.

Anissa stuffed the chilly padding beneath the cups of her dress. Her boobs looked huge. Instead of the burst of confidence she'd expected, she hated her reflection in the mirror. The additions didn't fit her frame. But she had a date and no choice but to do her best to entice him. If fake boobs worked, then fine. She'd take her chances.

She donned the jacket, then grabbed her purse and hurried downstairs.

Kam stood in the foyer. He wore the same battered leather jacket, faded jeans and dark sunglasses as he always did. He touched his earpiece. "In position."

Her heart fluttered. Kameron Stone personified sex in human form. Her nipples ached, and she pressed her knees together. She'd never been with a man and wanted Kam to be her first. If she had her way, he'd be her only.

Would he fuck her?

Better yet, would he love her the way she loved him?

"I have the package," Kam said. "Preparing to leave."

She frowned. The package. She didn't have the honor of being referred to by her name. Gaining his attention wasn't going to be easy. "I'm ready."

Kam nodded. "This way, Ms. Dunn."

"Anissa." He'd used her last name. Dang it. She'd pleaded with him so many times to call her by her first name. Ms. Dunn was her mother. She was just Anissa.

"Ms. Dunn." Kam escorted her to the front porch, then down the steps. He opened the passenger door of the limo. "After you."

"Thanks." She couldn't leave the house without her trusty bodyguard, Kam. She settled on the seat and folded her hands on her lap. Kam would do anything to protect her, and she trusted him, but she was twenty-one and her father needed to put some faith in her. He'd sheltered her from everything. She didn't resent him for trying -- when she turned twenty-five, she'd come into a hefty sum of cash via the trust her mother had left her, but still. She'd gone to an all-girls college, a private all-girls high school and never spent more than a few hours on her own. She crossed her legs, and her skirt rode high on her leg. Did Kam notice? Did he care?

She swept her gaze over him as he sat beside her. Strong and silent. He wore his clothes like a second skin, could eviscerate anyone who tried to get too close, but Kam said so little. Half the time she had no idea if he listened to her. Knowing him, he tuned her out.

"Kam?" She shifted in her seat to face him. Her skirt rode higher. He didn't pay her any attention, which rankled her. "Kameron."

"Ms. Dunn." He seemed to stare straight ahead.

She whipped out her phone. She couldn't go through with the date. Not now. She sent a text to the driver, requesting he stay in the driveway. She'd sent the itinerary to the security team but saw no point in leaving the house. Kam wasn't paying attention to her -- not in the way she wanted. He didn't seem to care.

She sighed. According to the magazines she'd bought, her college roommate and the dirty movies she'd watched in the middle of the night, she had to be aggressive and demand what she wanted. Sure... she could be aggressive. She could demand his attention. But she wasn't sure how.

Anissa switched seats to face Kam. The car rolled to a stop, most likely in front of the house. She parted her legs and leaned back. "Kam."

If he looked at her, she couldn't tell.

"Ms. Dunn?" Kam tensed, and the muscle in his jaw twitched. "Are you okay?"

Nope. He hadn't noticed her lousy attempts to entice him.

"I'm fine," she mumbled. What a liar..."I'd like to talk to you."

"Of course."

He had to make this hard. Fine. She'd be tough. "Did you know where we're going?"

"I do. I've been informed you're to visit Ahuja Cancer Center for the opening of their pediatric wing," Kam said. "Would you like to change?"

The opening of the pediatric wing? She'd never seen that request. "Since when?" Irritation filled her brain. If she'd known she had a real date, she wouldn't have dressed like a streetwalker.

"Your father amended the plans for this evening." Kam's tone remained annoyingly flat. "You're dressed a bit... inappropriately for the event. You should consider a more conservative outfit."

Damn. She shrugged out of her coat. Men wanted blunt, didn't they? She squared her shoulders, then straddled his lap. She flipped her hair over her shoulder. Holy hell. Sitting on his thighs reminded her of being on a bench -- so strong and hard... sturdy. Her nerve endings tingled. What would her stern bodyguard do if she flashed him? Of if she embraced her bold side and stretched across his lap, demanding a spanking? The women in those videos liked being spanked. The idea of having her ass reddened intrigued her. She'd never asked for punishment in her life, but she wanted Kam to dish some out -- right now. She shrugged out of the jacket.

"Ms. Dunn." Kam's tone hitched a bit, but his expression remained blank.

She removed his sunglasses. Looking into his eyes was much better -- and scary as hell. She pursed her lips. Was she coming across as sexy? Shoot. Now she wished she'd left his sunglasses in place so she could use the reflection. Too late now. She licked her lips. If she was going to make a move, she needed to do it already. She draped her arms around his neck. "I need you to help me."

This novel about friendship, nostalgia, and finding oneself is funny and tender, moving and poetic, while standing firmly in hope and love. The characters are thinkers, overthinkers really, who are trying to find their way by asking the deep questions of life with wide-eyed wonder and talking through life's uncertainties. They fearlessly confront the choices they've made, examining their desires and their mistakes. The result is a smart, engaging novel depicting a young woman's search for the people and place she will call home.

Praise for Wild Asses of the Mojave Desert

'The best stories begin with wreckage.' Jack London

…a journey away from the familiar and into the desert of discovery…As relationship quandaries, marriage possibilities, and good and harmful emotional connections emerge against the backdrop of the desert environment, readers receive a multifaceted story that connects via both emotional and landscape twists of perspective.

Wild Asses of the Mojave Desert is a novel that pulls at heart and mind alike. Through Skye's journey and process of letting go everything she's held tightly throughout her life, readers receive a compelling saga…

-D. Donovan, Sr. Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

With lyrical prose and philosophical conversation, Skye's relationships light up as fiercely as the streaks marking the desert sky at night. Returning home is a powerful and effective plot device that, in this author's hands, feels vibrant and new partly because of the fully realized characters and strong dialogue that endow the relationships with wise and vivid truths about life.

Blog Tour: Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and Nursing

New Adult/Adult Fiction

Date Published: 08-04-2022

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

My flatmate Bill summed me up recently. “Calum,” he said. “Ah love ye man, but when it comes tae women and relationships, you’re a total nightmare.” I'm not a bad guy. I mean ... I'm not. Ask anyone. I'm a nurse, for God’s sake. How bad could I be? Look, I'm not saying I'm an angel – far from it. I'm just saying...

Anyway... I'll let you be the judge.

Leaving Skye, I arrived in Edinburgh in the early 1980s to study nursing. I first met Bill when I moved into a shared flat in Warrender Park and got involved with his band, Low Down. Man, I loved their music and wanted to do anything I could to help them achieve success.

Of course, we took drugs – who didn't?

The thing is, I was selfish – I know that now. Knew it then too, but I was a man on a mission. The way I was living, though, it couldn’t last. I was on a collision course with myself and my karmic reward was waiting to kick me in the head.

Nyra’s transition from college grad scrambling for her first career job to full independence is as on track as it can be, these days. With her new marketing job is going well, even if she’s still living at home,Nyra’s pretty sure the light at the end of the tunnel is not an onrushing train.

But embracing one possibility often demands abandoning another. How can Nyra fit Tai and the seductive siren song of freedom into her “safer” vision of perfect? Can she blend her conventional world with his freespirited lifestyle, or is she doomed to disappointment and heartbreak? New Adult fans of It Ends with Us and Finding Perfect are sure to enjoy this upbeat tale of hope.

The Year of Maybe Act II of Nyra’s Journey continues the story begun in Best-Case Scenario.

Excerpt

Chapter XIII—Sunny, Windy and Warm

Nyra’s steep take-off earns her an appreciative hoot from Tai as he paddles back out. Brisk but warm offshore winds fan the wavetop into a silvery gossamer veil of spray blown back out to sea. She sinks the tail of her board and climbs the wave face for a vertical lip bash. Like she’s been doing it forever, she whips the nose of her new board straight down and loads up for a down-the-line race to the shoulder.

The wave is lining up perfectly, walling up but giving her plenty of wave face to carve a few graceful turns, and a roundhouse cutback. The inside section pops up without warning, and Nyra barely has time to bottom turn and get out before the wave sections in front of her.

Catalina and San Clemente islands seem to loom unnaturally close, she notes, as she paddles back out, alert for a possible clean-up set. As another wave looms up, already feathering to break, she claws for the horizon.

“Trestles today,” Tai had said when they met at San Onofre. “Lowers. Shape’s perfect and it’s overhead.”

“Okay,” Nyra had agreed.

Crowded, but she sticks close to Tai and quickly figures out where the peak’s forming. Her confidence has grown exponentially over the last couple months, and she works her way into the informal rotation, without even thinking about it. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to paddle out with Tai. Instant respect. Everyone knows him and is very much aware of his recent win on the circuit.

Tai’s sitting casually on his board, one foot up, studying a cut on his instep, as she paddles alongside from her last wave. The sullen flow of blood from his foot isn’t life-threatening, but the thought of infections creeps into Nyra’s head. “What happened?”

“Ahh, cut it on one of my fins.” He shrugs dismissively.

“Shouldn’t you—”

“Nah. It’s not like it’s a coral cut.’”

“Maybe she’s right,” one of the guys they’ve been surfing with says. Brock, if she remembers correctly. “You’re shark bait.”

“Outside,” Tai says. He slips prone and starts paddling as another peak pops up. “Tide’s pulling,” he adds sidelong. He races one of the locals for the peak, sinks the tail of his board, takes one double-armed stroke, and drops in with insolent grace. He disappears behind the wave, to reappear thirty feet down the line, the point of his board stabbing at the sky as he smacks the lip vertically and disappears, again.

When he reappears, he does a front-side floater before dropping out of sight.

Tai’s been feeling it ever since he won the South Africa contest. Understandable, with major corporate sponsors lining up to catch the front end of his rising stardom. Ny had half-expected him to ghost her. But he had called her from Johannesburg to tell her he’d won and again after his stop in Tahiti to catch a Teahupo’o swell on the way back from Africa. To her surprise, he asked her to meet him at the airport. They’d surfed together the last two weekends since.

“Looks like you were trying to do a floater,” Nyra says, as Tai paddles alongside.

“I did,” he agrees. “Took it all the way around, too.” He nods out to sea. “And maybe we should call it a day. Santa Ana’s dying anyway.”

Following his gaze, Nyra is surprised to see the bank of fog closing in. Where the hell did Catalina go? It was visible just  few minutes before.

“Wow. That was quick!” The first hint of the on shores tickles her cheek with a loose lock of her hair.

“Yeah, when the offshores die that quickly, it usually means a dramatic change in conditions. Bet the fog goes five miles inland by noon.”

Nyra looks at him in disbelief.

“It happens,” Tai assures her. “OMO’s a fickle woman.”

“Or a fickle man,” Nyra adds.

They both laugh. Our Mother Ocean (OMO) can be full of surprises, Nyra’s learned. She accepts the gender identity and nods at a peak building in front of them. She paddles for it, with Tai right behind her. They ride their last wave in together. By the time they’ve slipped out of their spring suits, under beach towels and into street clothes, the first wisps of fog are already closing in.

Nyra has slipped into her turquoise beach dress with the lace plaquette and passes on a bra, expecting—hoping—that Tai will notice.

“Are you as hungry as I am?” Tai asks.

“Starved.”

“Ever been to Pipelines?”

Nyra shakes her head.

“Follow me,” he suggests. He waits behind the wheel of his pickup while Nyra unlocks her Veloster and keys the ignition.

EXCERPT

Chapter 2

The next morning, I wake up just as the sky begins lightening and softly groan. It must be way too early to get up! I stretch my arms above my head about to go back to sleep when I roll over and blink a few times. Realizing where I am, I startle myself awake and push myself out of bed wanting to get out on the lake.

Making my way over to my dresser, I pull out my new pale pink and chocolate brown bikini and quickly strip out of my pajamas and throw it on. I love the colors with my pale skin and chestnut brown hair. Since I was such a late bloomer, it’s also the first summer I actually have enough in my bathing suit to fill out a bikini and I want to show it off, even it’s just for me. I don’t think I’m “the shit" or anything, but I’m comfortable with myself. I guess you could say I have my good days and bad days. I throw an old pair of jean shorts over the top of my suit, slip my feet into my black and white flip flops and rush out to the kitchen.

Reaching for a notepad and pen, I quickly scrawl out a note to Gram. I don’t want her to worry.

“Good morning, Grandma,

I left to go kayaking. I’ll be back soon. I love you!

Love, Bree.”

I place a rubber band around my wrist to throw my hair up later and slip out the back door, making my way down to the lake where my green kayak sits waiting. As I pick my life jacket up out of the center of the kayak I hear light splashing, signaling either an animal in the water or someone might be paddling close by.

Quietly, I step towards the shore and freeze with my mouth hanging open. Through the trees I see the most beautiful boy I’ve ever seen and he’s no scrawny fifteen-year-old! He seems to already have a nice golden tan. His light brown hair has sun-kissed blonde highlights hanging messily, but perfect just above his eyebrows. Sunlight begins peeking up on the other side of the lake and seems to be reflecting off him, making him appear to be shimmering. He’s so close to the shore I can actually see his muscles rippling from his miniscule movements, with his arms bare and then hiding underneath a light blue t-shirt.

I concentrate on closing my mouth and squinting to see if I can tell what color his eyes might be when he stops and places his paddle on top of his blue kayak and starts looking around the lake. That’s when it happens. I guess I’ve been unconsciously inching closer to the lake, and I step too close to a wet, slimy rock. Awkwardly, I slip and lean forward with my arms swinging, trying to catch my balance. Letting out a helpless squeal, I lean too far and fall unceremoniously into the lake with a splash.

As I lift my head, sputtering, a loud chuckle erupts from what I can only assume is the beautiful boy in the boat. I look up, completely mortified and glare, red as a cherry tomato, with my face feeling like it’s on fire! He smiles, taking my breath away as he gestures to my life jacket. "You know, even if you can't swim, the water is only about a foot and a half deep there," he advises playfully.

My whole body begins to boil with embarrassment as I continue to glare at him while he inches closer. He easily jumps out of his kayak holding out his hand to help me up, still grinning. "It's okay. I won't push you back in," he teases. I reluctantly reach for his offered hand. He pulls me up a little too hard and I bump into his chest. His muscles tense as I plant my free hand on his chest in attempt to brace myself from impact. "Sorry about that," he mumbles, smirking at me, not appearing sorry at all.

I feel tingles shoot from our connected fingers all the way down to my toes as I finally meet his gaze. "Blue,” I mumble, staring into his eyes. Inhaling quickly, I begin to panic, seeing the strange look he gives me. “I mean thanks,” I quickly amend. Jerking my hand away, I take a step back, and almost lose my balance again, but he grabs my elbow, steadying me. "Thanks. I was just about to head out in my kayak."

"Don't you need a kayak for that?" he questions, smiling wryly. I narrow my eyes at him again and gesture to my kayak back on the bank behind the trees as I gather my now somewhat wet hair up into a ponytail. He guides his kayak towards the shore and jumps out of the water, grabbing mine before I'm even done with my hair.

"I can do that," I call out.

"I'm sure you can," he concedes, his smirk still on his gorgeous face. I just stare at him as he slides my kayak effortlessly into the water over the rocks.

"We have a ramp right there, so you don't have to pull it over the rocks," I inform him, pointing towards the ramp.

"Yeah, but you're already in the water over here," he observes, glancing at the ramp and back over to me allowing his eyes to quickly sweep down my body giving me goose bumps. "How about some company? I can show you around the lake," he suggests, smiling even broader.

I can’t stop my laugh from escaping. "I know my way around pretty well, thanks."

"Well, then, can you show me around a little more? I've only been here for a short time, and I would love to know some of the secret spots around here," he proposes, raising his eyebrows in question.

I roll my eyes and grin. "Ok. I just like to take it slow in the mornings though if that’s okay with you. I usually go along the shore and kind of check everything out. I was going to watch the sunrise, but I guess I'm too late for that now," I acknowledge, crinkling my nose as I look out at the already rising sun across the lake.

"Is that why you jumped right into the lake without your kayak?" he taunts, smirking. I roll my eyes again, not bothering to respond. "I'm Christian, by the way," he introduces himself, reaching his hand towards me with a full-watt smile. My breath catches in my throat. I dig my toes into the muddy bottom and take a deep breath to keep myself from falling over as I slowly reach for his hand. "And you are?" he prompts.

"Sorry,” I mumble, shaking my head at my awkwardness. “I'm Bree. I guess I wasn't expecting to see anyone this morning. I'm still waking up," I claim, hoping he'll buy my lame excuse.

"Bree, I like that,” he mumbles thoughtfully. “Is that short for anything?"

"Briann," I confirm with a nod.

Suddenly, I realize I’m staring into his electrifying ice blue eyes again with his large hand still holding mine. I quickly drop my gaze and tug my hand away, turning to step into my kayak as a blush consumes me once again from head to toe. I see him watching me get in out of the corner of my eye before climbing back into his own kayak. “So, where to Bree?” he prods, still grinning.

I take a deep breath to calm my trembling hands, then another, hoping my voice won’t come out shaky. “Where were you coming from?” He points behind us and I suggest, “Then, let’s keep going this way.”

I dip my paddle into the water and a chill goes through me, my whole body shuddering. “Are you okay?” he questions.

“Just cold,” I retort, not wanting to give him too much.

He nods and smiles mischievously, his eyes sparkling. “Let me know if you need anything to warm up.” Afraid to respond, not quite sure if his comment was all that innocent, I just nod my head, listening as his chuckle rumbles over the water. The sound has tingles practically consuming my whole body.

After a few minutes, he breaks the silence. “So, how do you know the lake so well? I haven’t seen you around here at all this past month.”

I almost breathe a sigh of relief, grateful with the change of topic. “My grandma lives here,” I inform him, pointing back to her house. “I’ve spent every summer with her since I was nine.”

“I think I’ve seen your grandma. So, you’re here for the whole summer?” he probes, arching his eyebrow in question. I nod my head in confirmation. “Well, it looks like my summer just got a whole lot better,” he happily admits, giving me another heart-melting smile.

Heat slams into me with his compliment, my whole body flushing from head to toe. “What about you? Where are you from?” I question, trying to move the attention away from me.

He pauses like he's contemplating his answer before he responds. “All over really; most recently Maryland and now here before I leave for college. We move around a lot for my dad’s job. Every couple years he seems to get a promotion that comes with a move.”

“That must be hard.”

He shrugs. “You get used to it and now I’m off to college, so I guess after this summer it won’t matter much anyway.”

“Where are you going to college?”

“University of Southern Maine. I like it up here.” We paddle quietly for a few minutes. Then he glances at me, asking, “What about you?” I must look confused because he grins and prompts, “Future plans?”

I nod my head in understanding and inform him, “I have one more year left of high school and then I’d like to come back this way as well. University of Southern Maine is actually where I’d like to go, if I get in. I want to be close to my grandma and they have a ton of programs to choose from,” I explain. To myself, I can’t help but think it’s also far away from my parents. It’s not like they’re ever around anyway.

“They’d be crazy not to accept you,” he claims, quietly. I blush again in response and quickly look the other way. “So, are there any secret coves or something like that around here?”
