Book One of the Fitzjohn Duology

Historical Fiction with Speculative and Romantic Elements

Date Published: 09-01-2026

Publisher: Literary Wanderlust

England, 1381 AD: Blanche Fitzjohn is an outcast in her small coastal village. Not only is she the illegitimate daughter of John of Gaunt, the man responsible for her neighbors’ over-taxation, but she possesses strange abilities: hearing sound from miles away and smelling people’s emotions.

She takes solace in her studies with the local wisewoman and in her friendship with Geoff, a groom at the local manor. Until the day Henry of Lancaster, Blanche’s half-brother, brings her news of an arranged marriage to Sir Thomas Prescott, Constable of the Tower of London. Although she smells cruelty on him, Blanche agrees to marry Thomas in the hopes that her influence may help better the lives of Geoff and all England’s villeins.

But soon, the peasants’ discontent turns to revolt. Though her heart is of the people, Blanche’s nobility makes her an enemy to the rebels. To save herself and Henry from the executioner’s ax, Blanche must use every power at her disposal, even those she once considered a curse.

Blog Tour: Thinking Critically in College

The Essential Handbook for Student Success

Nonfiction, College Guide

Date Published: April 1, 2026

Publisher: Manhattan Book Group

The Definitive Guide for Success in College and Beyond

Finally, a book that actually prepares you for college! Nearly every first-year college student discovers that college courses are more academically challenging than high school. Professors expect you not just to absorb material but to analyze and synthesize it, to consider multiple perspectives, to evaluate conflicting evidence, and then to apply what you've learned in new contexts.

Drawing on a lifetime of experience teaching and advising students, former dean of Academic Advising and associate vice provost at Stanford University Louis E. Newman explains how to do all this, and more. Whatever your background or academic interest, this book will prepare you for college-level learning. Thinking Critically in College is the definitive guide, not only for those in college, but for everyone who needs a refresher on thinking clearly.

"Thinking Critically in College details and exemplifies the differences between high school and college. Students who read this book before coming to college will have an advantage over those who don't." -LEE CUBA, professor emeritus of sociology, Wellesley College, and author of Practice for Life: Making Decisions in College

"Even students who have taken college-prep and AP courses are unprepared for the type of learning that will take place in college. Thinking Critically in College is poised to help all students at all types of institutions develop the dispositions and skills necessary for success in college." -LYNN PASQUERELLA, president of Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U)

Excerpt

A Word to Teachers

All of us who have the responsibility of teaching students, both college-bound high school students and first-year college students, know both the excitement of opening their minds to new ideas and the challenges of teaching them how to think critically. For many of us, trained in specific disciplines and tasked with making that content accessible to our students, we feel the responsibility to focus our efforts on content. There is so much our students need to learn—concepts and vocabulary, methods and theories. If we don’t impart that knowledge in our courses, students will not be prepared for more advanced work in the discipline. There is no time to address more general issues—how to think analytically or quantitatively, much less how to study effectively or to cultivate metacognition.

And yet we know that many (likely, most) beginning college students are clueless about the sort of thinking we expect of them. They pick it up, if at all, by a process of trial and error. The result is mutual frustration—students frustrated that they are unclear what college-level thinking means and how to do it, and faculty frustrated that our students don’t get it. In my view, there is only one way forward: to be explicit about what critical thinking is and how to do it and then to illustrate that in the way we teach, in the assignments we give, and in the feedback we provide them. It is my hope that this book will provide a concise and accessible framework for doing these things, without detracting significantly from the time needed to cover discipline-specific topics.

If you use this book as a text for one of your courses, I encourage you to do so in whatever ways best suit your needs and the needs of your students. The chapters do not need to be assigned in their entirety or in the order in which they appear here. Some may be more relevant to your purposes than others, and some may complement specific units in your course, which dictates when (or whether) you assign them. If you do use the book in its entirety, you will notice that some messages—such as seeking help and thinking critically to identify one’s own biases—are reiterated at multiple points in the text.

It will be apparent that this book is written for an American audience. It assumes the context of American baccalaureate education, and the examples offered are typical of materials that students would encounter in American classrooms. In this regard, I am a product of my own education and of the educational institutions I have worked in. If you are teaching international students or in a non-American institution, you may need to supplement the reading selections with others that are more culturally familiar or be prepared to provide more context than I have here.

Similarly, the questions for reflection that appear at the conclusion of each chapter are meant to be suggestive. I wrote them with the intention that they could serve as brief written reflection assignments. But you may find that there are other prompts that will stimulate your students to practice what they have learned in these pages or to reflect on how they could apply those lessons to their academic work. The goals of these prompts are to help students review the main points covered in that chapter, to reflect on their own learning process, and to consider the ways in which they could apply what they have learned.

As I write this, our country is still dealing with the impact of a two-year period of grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic. Students have been profoundly affected by the altered learning environment they have endured during this period. While I do not believe that these disruptions have changed our goals to teach our students to think critically and creatively about the material we assign them, they have surely affected our students’ readiness to do so. Things we assumed they had learned will likely need to be retaught. The lessons covered here may need to be scaffolded more carefully or introduced more slowly. All this may affect how you choose to use this book as you do the hard work of meeting students where they are. In all, it is my hope that the guide to college-level thinking presented here may be even more timely as students struggle to catch up on the fundamentals they need to succeed in college.

Finally, it is worth remembering that acquiring critical-thinking skills is the work of a lifetime. At best, we lay the foundations for that work—first by explaining that this is a long-term goal of higher education, and then by introducing some of the tools students need and demonstrating how to use them. It would be a disservice to students and to the cause of education to suggest that any single book could inculcate in them all the critical-thinking skills they will use throughout their lives. But we can—and must—show them how these skills are embedded in the work they are asked to do in college and how practicing these skills will serve them well, no matter what careers they choose. In that sense, the goals of this book are modest, even though I believe its purpose is of paramount importance for us as educators.

PROMO: WhiteGrass

A CliFi Technothriller

Date Published: October 24, 2025

Publisher: Manhattan Book Group

In 2048, the planet is running out of time.

Superstorms flatten cities. Coastlines collapse. Climate change is no longer theoretical—it is lethal. When a near-apocalyptic storm nearly kills their family, teenage siblings Jimmy and Lizzie Marshall urge their brilliant but reluctant father, nanoscientist Greg Marshall, to deploy a technology before he’s brave enough to release it.

WhiteGrass—a self-replicating nanotechnology capable of removing carbon from the atmosphere is the parent technology. It saves golf courses and ski resorts and the towns they serve. Icarus could reverse climate change on a global scale. It could also reshape global power forever.

To protect the technology, Greg and his wife Ginny, an elite AI expert, reprogram the world’s most advanced humanoid android, Valada. Designed as property—an object without rights—Valada begins to evolve, developing emotional awareness, moral judgment, and something disturbingly close to humanity.

As governments unravel and climate disasters accelerate, a covert alliance of oligarchs, corporations, and political power brokers moves to seize WhiteGrass/Icarus for themselves. Led by the President of the United States, the syndicate will stop at nothing—surveillance, blackmail, assassination—to control the technology that could save the world or enslave it.

They deploy their own deadly android.

Now the Marshalls are trapped in a global sci-fi political conspiracy, hunted by forces with unlimited resources, as skyscrapers fall, cities burn, and artificial intelligence begins to ask questions no human is prepared to answer.

“We call it ‘Climate Change,’” Lizzie interrupted, “because it’s not just the heat.”
“It’s everything—the rains, the droughts, the storms, the sea level… even the acidification.” It could change everything.

At its core, WhiteGrass is a gripping near-future climate change thriller about family survival, technological power, and the terrifying moment when artificial intelligence stops serving humanity—and starts judging it.

Blending nanotechnology science fiction, AI humanoid emotional evolution, and hard-science realism, WhiteGrass delivers relentless pacing, cinematic stakes, and deeply human emotion. It is a story about parents willing to risk everything to protect their children—and a world forced to confront whether it deserves saving at all.

Perfect for fans of near-future disaster thrillers, technothrillers with political intrigue, and science fiction where artificial intelligence becomes human, WhiteGrass is a powerful warning—and an unforgettable ride.

About the Author

Richard H. Smith, MSc.
Author | Futurist | Nanotechnology & Policy Expert | Climate Technothriller Writer

Richard H. Smith, MSc., is a futurist, technologist, and climate policy expert whose career has placed him at the intersection of nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, healthcare innovation, and climate change foresight for more than three decades. Drawing on real-world experience working alongside scientists, engineers, Fortune 50 companies, and Ohgovernment agencies, Smith writes hard science fiction grounded in plausible futures, where technology collides with political power, ethics, and human survival.

Smith’s professional background spans leadership roles in nanotechnology R&D, AI-based medical diagnostics, strategic technology forecasting, and science policy, including serving as research director at a major university medical center and founding multiple technology ventures. He has advised U.S. and international governments on emerging technologies and was formally trained on climate change science by Al Gore, giving him a rare combination of technical depth and policy insight.

Raised in Virginia, Smith built his career while raising a family—an experience that deeply informs the emotional core of his fiction. Today, he lives in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, a coastal community already facing the realities of sea-level rise. He teaches courses on climate change and coastal vulnerability, witnessing firsthand how future scenarios are rapidly becoming present-day realities.

WhiteGrass is Smith’s first full-length novel and the culmination of a lifetime spent studying how advanced technologies shape—and endanger—civilization. The novel explores nanotechnology, climate collapse, political conspiracy, and artificial intelligence becoming human, all through the lens of family survival in a destabilized near-future world. A prequel, The Iliad Virus, is available now, with the sequel Icarus Rising currently in development.

Smith writes with one driving purpose: to expose uncomfortable truths about climate change, technological power, and political control—while telling a story compelling enough to feel like a blockbuster movie unfolding on the page.

A brave little dragon. A forest in danger. A powerful story about friendship, courage, and protecting the world we share.

Little Branko lives high above Dragonville in Zmajograd, a city of dragons controlled by rules - the Dragons’ Code. Under this code, dragons cannot put out fires and dragons cannot be friends with humans. But Branko has never understood why. Unlike the other dragons, he does not want to start fires—he wants to put them out.

When Branko questions the Dragons’ Code in school, he is told to “learn” and not “think”. When he persists, he is banished from his community. Determined to follow his heart, he travels to the human town below and dreams of becoming a firefighter. But the humans are afraid of him, too. Caught between two worlds that refuse to accept him, Branko must decide whether to give up—or keep believing that kindness can change everything.

Excerpt

When I first started writing, I didn’t know I was writing a book.

These were just diary entries. Sometimes I wrote because I was upset. Other times, I wrote because I learned something, or because a parent, teacher, or moment made me think deeply. I didn’t write every day. I didn’t always know what I was trying to say. But now, looking back, I see a path. A trail of thoughts, drawings, struggles, and questions.

From age 10 to now, 16, I’ve changed a lot. But some things have stayed the same: I still want to understand life. I still think about who I am and who I want to be.

Ice hockey, especially goaltending, has been a huge part of that journey. It taught me to face fear — literally — as pucks flew toward my body. It taught me patience, repetition, and how to fail in front of people. But more than that, it forced me to balance ego and humility.

This book isn’t about being perfect. It’s about practicing — not just with your talents, but with your thoughts, your choices, your character. It’s about growing, slowly and painfully sometimes, into someone you respect.

If you’re someone who’s growing up, too, I hope something in these pages speaks to you. Whether you're in the classroom, with your family, or just trying to figure things out, you’re not alone.

About the Author

Eddy Yang is a student, writer, ice hockey goalie, and young author whose work focuses on self-reflection, personal growth, family values, faith, discipline, and character development.

His passion for writing began long before he imagined becoming an author. Throughout childhood, Eddy kept journals, diary entries, drawings, comics, and reflections that documented his experiences, thoughts, challenges, and questions about life.

Over time, these personal writings evolved into something larger—a record of growth from childhood into adolescence.

The Beginning of a Writer

Eddy never started writing with the intention of publishing a book.

He wrote to understand himself.

Sometimes he wrote after difficult experiences. Other times he wrote after learning valuable lessons from parents, teachers, coaches, teammates, or faith. Writing became a way to process emotions, reflect on mistakes, and preserve important moments.

As he revisited years of journals and drawings, he recognized a story unfolding: the story of becoming.

Hockey and Character

As an ice hockey goalie, Eddy has learned lessons that extend far beyond the rink.

Goaltending taught him courage, resilience, humility, patience, and discipline. It taught him how to handle pressure, recover from failure, and continue improving after setbacks.

These experiences became a powerful influence on his understanding of personal growth and are woven throughout his writing.

Why He Wrote A Boy Becoming

Eddy wrote A Boy Becoming because he believes growth happens through ordinary moments.

Character is not built overnight.

It develops through repeated choices, honest reflection, mistakes, perseverance, gratitude, forgiveness, and love.

His hope is that readers—especially young people—will recognize that they are not alone in their struggles and that becoming a better person is a lifelong journey worth embracing.

Mission

Through his writing, Eddy hopes to inspire readers to:

● Practice kindness
● Develop discipline
● Embrace humility
● Learn from mistakes
● Strengthen character
● Value family and faith
● Continue growing every day

"Kind is more important than smart. Logic has no moral. We must be nice no matter what."

California Ocean Lifeguarding — Where Responsibility Meets Purpose

Some lessons in life are taught in classrooms. Others are learned where the stakes are real, the margin for error is gone, and the outcome rests in your hands.

For me, that place was the shoreline.

While attending San Diego State University, I was encouraged to apply for the California State Lifeguards. What began as a challenge quickly became something more—a calling. The training was relentless, designed not just to test strength, but to reveal character. It demanded discipline, resilience, and the ability to remain calm when everything around you was not.

When I earned my place and stepped onto the beaches of San Clemente, I began to understand what it truly meant to be responsible for another human life.

From a lifeguard tower overlooking the Pacific, the ocean can appear calm, almost inviting. But beneath the surface, it is constantly changing—shifting currents, unseen hazards, and moments where everything can turn in an instant. Our role was not just to react, but to anticipate. To see what others could not. To act before hesitation had a chance to take hold.

And sometimes, despite all preparation, the unexpected arrives.

One call brought me face to face with a reality no training can fully prepare you for—a fatal accident near the beach. As we secured the scene, a grieving family member arrived, desperate for answers, desperate for one final look. In that moment, I realized that being a lifeguard was not only about saving lives, but about protecting people from pain when saving them was no longer possible. It was about compassion under pressure, and judgment when emotions ran high.

Another day, responding to a multi-victim accident along the highway, I found myself in the middle of controlled chaos—injuries everywhere, voices calling out, seconds slipping away. Training took over. You move, you prioritize, you act. Later, when the noise fades, you reflect—not on what you did, but on what it meant.

Because those moments stay with you.

Yet, some of the most powerful lessons came not from emergencies, but from quiet acts of leadership. One morning, a supervisor asked us to step down from our towers and clean the beach. It seemed simple—almost insignificant. But his message was clear: no task is beneath you when you are part of a team. Leadership is not about visibility; it is about responsibility.

Over time, I came to understand that lifeguarding was never just a job. It was a proving ground—a place where discipline was tested, character was revealed, and purpose began to take shape.

The ocean taught me to remain steady when conditions turned unpredictable. It taught me that preparation creates confidence, and that confidence allows you to act when others cannot. Most importantly, it taught me that the decisions you make in a single moment can change the course of someone else’s life forever.

Those lessons did not stay at the water’s edge.

They carried forward—into every challenge, every opportunity, and every dream that followed.

And this is only the beginning—discover the full journey from lifeguard towers to the frontiers of space.

Her debut picture book, Peanut Butter & Donner: A Curious Chorus, is the first title in the Peanut Butter & Donner series—a collection of rhyming children’s books inspired by a real-life animal friendship and the desire to give language to big feelings in little bodies. Through lyrical rhyme and memorable animal characters, Erin’s stories help children navigate emotions in developmentally appropriate ways.

Inspired by her own rescued rabbit and parakeet, A Curious Chorus tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a shy bunny and a bold bird, showing how kindness, patience, and understanding can bridge differences and build lasting trust.

For this lovingly revised second edition, Erin thoughtfully refined the story to create a smoother read-aloud flow while preserving the heart, warmth, and emotional message readers loved in the original release. This updated edition offers families, educators, and caregivers an even more engaging reading experience, paired with refreshed illustrations and timeless themes of connection, empathy, and compassion.

Across the Peanut Butter & Donner series, Erin explores topics such as friendship, bravery, grief, envy, emotional resilience, anger, frustration, and learning to feel safe, seen, and understood. Her stories are designed to open conversations, encourage empathy, and help children recognize that all feelings are good even when they feel too big and too hard to handle.

When she is not writing or working in her private practice, Erin enjoys spending time with family and friends, surrounded by the beloved animals who inspired her stories including the real Peanut Butter and Donner. She believes in finding magic in everyday moments and hopes her books leave children with a better understanding of the big feelings that are part of our everyday lives.

Crime Thriller

Date Published: April 8, 2026

Publisher: MindStir Media

Eden Valley is a quiet town in northwestern Pennsylvania still healing from a dark chapter in its history. Two years ago, the community was shaken by a kidnapping and a series of murders. Tom Stallings, the celebrated town hero, solved the crimes and identified the evil demon responsible. In an effort to revitalize the town, Tom's son, Josh, has purchased the town's orchard, naming it The Stallings Orchard at Crick Road Bridge.

However, Tom is soon informed by the local sheriff that he and his family are the targets of a threatening letter, mysteriously signed "The Avenger." The unknown author accuses Tom and Josh of being land-grabbers with blood on their hands and vows to seek revenge.

Against this tense backdrop, three individuals-each driven by their own pain and misguided sense of justice-embark on separate journeys of revenge. While the first merely seeks to resolve personal grievances and jealousy through minor acts of vandalism, the other two harbor far more sinister intentions, representing both physical and metaphorical storms on a path of chaos and destruction.

Excerpt

Summer was in full swing, and the good people of Eden Valley spent lazy days basking in the warm sunshine and delighting in their clover-covered hillsides. Fathers toiled in the fields while mothers hung the family clothes outside to dry, and children ran to catch iridescent dragonflies that darted across the tall grasses. They lived a life completely detached and unaware that far away, time and events were beginning to form two impending and threatening storms. By day, the hot winds from the west and south would soon be blowing across the dry plains and over the forest-covered mountains, and by night, enshrouded in darkness, they would continue to become more and more forceful as they moved forward on a deadly path of death and destruction toward their intended destination and unsuspecting victims. These were storms that had been in the making for decades, and like all life-changing storms, they would be assigned individual names.

About the Author

David Kerr grew up in the small, rural community of Enon Valley, Pennsylvania, in the '50s and '60s where the main source of employment was farming or working in the steel mill industry. Surrounded by families who struggled to maintain their middle- class lifestyle and hold tightly to the American values of God, family, and country, little did he realize that these people and places would become the inspiration for his novels.

A graduate of Georgia Southern University, Kerr served as an English teacher and school administrator for forty-four years. Following his retirement, he wrote and published two mystery novels, Secrets of Crick Road Bridge and Storms of Crick Road Bridge.

Today, he and his wife, Lois, live in Woodstock, Georgia, where they enjoy being close to their daughter Paige, son-in-law, Chris, and grandsons, Banks and Ford
