Excerpt

Speaking of things that weren’t easy for me, I remember another early

moment in our marriage. Terina was growing increasingly frustrated

with my workaholism, my recreaholism, and the time I spent chasing

hobbies that pulled me away from our family. Thankfully, she had a

wise mentor named Mary who gave her simple but powerful advice:

“You have a choice. Trust Wayne and talk through your concerns, or

let bitterness take root.”

Instead of letting resentment grow in silence, Terina chose to speak

up. That decision led to honest, sometimes difficult conversations

that helped me understand the real impact of my choices. It also

taught us early on how crucial it is to have the right kind of pit crew

relationships. These are the people who guide you toward truth and

restoration, not just venting and division.

If she had chosen the wrong person to confide in, someone who

might have fueled her frustration instead of helping her fight for our

marriage, the story could have ended very differently. We see this

happen with people today. The wrong relationships talk you into a

narrative of destruction.

Terina helped me see that I needed to “release the wheel” on some

of my hobbies and work habits. Sometimes downshifting means

letting go of an old one!

If there’s one analogy that perfectly captures our family dynamics,

it’s the Bronco. Imagine this: Before marriage, Terina and I were like

two independent drivers navigating our own muddy roads in our

trusty Broncos. Each of us had our own challenges and victories.

When we decided to merge our lives, it was like locking our vehicles

together into one powerful Bronco, driving in unison toward a

shared destination.

Then our children came along. Suddenly, our single Bronco split

into multiple vehicles—Terina in one, me in another, and our kids

each on their own tracks. We had to fight to keep those two vehicles

side by side. Each Bronco felt the constant pull of external forces,

threatening to pull us apart. I remember times when the tension

was so strong that we found ourselves fighting to claim the wheel,

each trying to steer in a different direction. The more we fought, the

more we slid off track.

We had to let go of the need for individual control and work really

hard to keep our Broncos side-by-side on the same track! We had to

choose trust, and have an unwavering commitment to one another.
