Fate is fickle. At least that’s how Zoey Morgan sees it. As a witch old enough to know better, yet too sexy for any man to resist, she is tired of running. From her past. From the pain. But especially from her worst nightmare. Not being able to save her family from the clutches of a great evil.

Unfortunately, she’d been doing it so long, she isn’t sure how to stop.

That is until an ex-military wolf-shifter crosses her path.

To say Ryan Taylor is a jaded breed of his own is quite the understatement. It seems his past, too, is riddled with enough cynicism to make trusting a woman like Zoey a difficult feat. Still, his innate drive to protect an innocent is as intrinsic as the act of breathing, which makes leaving her to face her demons alone harder than any covert mission.

Their fiery mutual attraction doesn’t help, and it isn’t long before the sparks and fur began to fly, all while Zoey’s past continues to haunt her. With no choice left but to combine military with magic, the two work together to take down Zoey’s nemesis, finally, once and for all.

Hell In Heels Excerpt

A lift of Ryan’s brow was the only indication he gave in acknowledgement the woman had grabbed her a handful of his family jewels through his blue jeans. He had quickly decided she looked even better close up than from where he had been observing at the bar. Long black hair with a slight curl fell to the middle of her back, and the sweet, sexy curve of her ass made his mouth water. Her legs were stacked in some heels making said ass tilt up just right. Damn, he would love to sink his canines into that bit of flesh encased in leather. Her legs seemed to go on forever, and he could envision them wrapped around him, her soft soprano begging for more. Blinking at the biker, he cocked a brow, challenging the man to try something in the middle of the dance floor. The woman’s body language told Ryan she wanted out of the other man’s grip and he was just the type to help a damsel in distress.

Luckily the bodies dancing around them moved away from the three as if they were sensing the tension, and not coming close to it. Damn good thing he had learned to be a quick thinker on his feet, 'cause this dark haired beauty had her nice compact body plastered to his before he could blink. Her lush, curvy body fit right against his in all the right places. Rough hands connected with her shapely hips, holding her firmly in place. The growl and stomping off from Roman were ignored by both of them.

“What's your name, Sweetheart?" Ryan asked the sex kitten in his arms.

"Zoey. My name is Zoey.” Her breathless reply made Ryan look down at her and smile.

“What's yours, other than Texas?" Zoey asked him, her arms wrapped around him, holding tight as their feet scraped against hardwood in a slow, sensuous circle. As Ryan’s body swayed with hers to the music he wondered if the husky, yet breathless sound came from her when the music changed gradually from a heart pumping staccato to a mellow, sensual rhythm.

"Ryan Taylor, ma'am." His laugh was filled with amusement at the nickname she called him. Women always said they loved his accent.

"Thanks, Handsome, for your help. I didn't want to kick his ass in front of his friends," Zoey said so matter of fact it made Ryan chuckle. He did a slight tip of an imaginary hat in acknowledgment for the rescue.

“He’d probably enjoy your hands all over him while you did,” Ryan said in amusement and began moving them in a leisurely shuffle around the wooden dance floor. Doing so to keep up the appearance of them being a couple and to keep the male from coming back to try anything else with Zoey.

“What about you?” She arched a brow. “Do you enjoy my hands on you?” Her eyes zeroed in on Ryan’s sensual lips. “Because if you do, you’d really like my mouth.”

"I’m sure it would be a pleasure, Darlin', to have those hands and mouth of yours on me." Luscious curves slid against his like they were one. No woman before had been this attuned and in sync as they danced, making Ryan a little edgy at how normal it felt.

"Tell me something, Sweetness. Why is a pretty thing like you in a ratty town like this?" Ryan wasn’t one to believe in the bullshit of karma, fate, or things happening for a reason. He trusted his instincts and facts. It’s what kept him alive.

"Long story Ryan." She appeared cool and in control, but he could tell by the tiny shivers and goosebumps she was more than a little affected by his presence.

“Get a room!” a voice hollered from behind them. For a moment, Ryan could feel Zoey stiffen in his arms. He could tell she had recognized the woman who had shouted, because she looked over her shoulder and grinned before giving all of her attention back to him.

"You're in luck, Ryan. I've got all night long," Zoey replied in a deep husky rumble prompting all types of carnal delights.

"All night huh?" Damn, he loved the sound of her raucous laugh, full of life, which broke free as they swung out into the middle of the dancing crowd. Ryan's version of the Texas Two-Step kept their bodies pressed together. Even the crowd gave them a wide berth as if each person knew what a bad idea it was to mess with him.

)O(

"What do I get for telling you why I’m in town? Hmm?" When Zoey spoke her lips rested on his ear and smiled with satisfaction when goosebumps rose and his monster erection jerked against the zipper of his jeans. For some reason, her body assured her mind, Ryan wouldn't be all tease, but into wild kinky sex. The wolf, whose hands were on her ass, would make it almost impossible for her to walk normally come morning, and wouldn't that put a smile on her face, perhaps for days. The memory would definitely keep her warm on a cold winter’s night

"Darlin', I can show you all kinds of wonders," Ryan said, promise lacing his words. The song changed up from the mediocre song to a slow tune, making them come to a standstill. It worked out just right as far as Zoey was concerned, since they ended up in a dark corner swaying to the melody. A shadowed environment ensured them some privacy, and total privacy is what she wanted with Ryan.

What darkness there was allowed her to rub up against Ryan like a cat in heat. Their movements were just enough to mimic dancing, but swaying to the beat was the last thing on her mind. The hands-on approach was more her style, and she let her fingers trace the sculpted musculature of his chest. Oh, how thankful she was to his broad shoulders for blocking prying eyes looking in their direction.

Ryan’s body was a living flame beneath her fingers. She watched as the bright blue of his eyes darkened in response to her scent. With just a subtle movement, he had her pinned against the wall making her murmur deep in her throat. Bodies melted together against the rough cream stucco. Zoey whimpered when he moved his hips to align with her sweet spot.

“Darlin’ your sweetness is like a subtle breeze of honeysuckle on a hot country night.” Shivering when Ryan’s lips grazed her ear, Zoey turned her face, wanting to taste the power behind the man once more. Anything she would have said was lost when his mouth connected with hers. He took what he wanted as if he hadn’t had a woman in forever, and she was just as starved for what he could give.

Even as Ryan kissed her, questions rolled across her mind like a movie. Where was he from? Did those dog tags mean he was in the military or were they from a loved one? Did he have a family? Friends? Did he even live around here? But all those questions disappeared as electricity zinged right through her body centering low in her belly with each furtive flick of his tongue. She had a moment to thank the gods her black leather skirt would hide the wetness of her panties because they were soaked. She had to curb the urge to rub her legs together until he backed her up against the wall. Tilting her head to deepen their kiss, Zoey gave herself over to Ryan completely.

Her top squeezed the girls as her breasts swelled. Her entire being anticipated the moment she would strip and his big hands would be on her skin. She fought the temptation to wrap her legs around his waist just to have the monster in his pants between her thighs. Was it as long and thick as it felt through his jeans or was he all show with nothing of substance behind it? Her mouth watered just thinking about it. Thankfully, neither one of them had any qualms about feeling the other up, even as he broke the kiss to zero in on her neck. Eyes closed Zoey drifted in a sexual hazy where everyone and everything ceased to exist.

“It's a little hot in here, don't you think Texas?" Zoey said, weaving her arms around his neck. "I know I'm all hot and bothered." She didn't resist the temptation to suck his earlobe between her lips after she whispered her latest tease.

Zoey could just imagine those cold nights being burned by the hot man under her fingertips, and ratcheted up her lust tenfold.

Zoey had no idea what drew her attention away from Ryan, but when she opened her eyes, she spied the one person she never wanted to see again. Phillip. But good ole Phil was not alone. He'd made himself some new, very dangerous friends. How the hell had he found her? Even if she hadn’t known who walked in the door, Phillip and his entourage were definitely out of place with their Miami Vice style of dress. Not too bright to walk into a redneck bar dressed in a yellow tee, white pants with matching jacket. Witch Hunters. The vermin of the human world in her opinion.

"Venántium." She whispered the warning to every witch in the bar, knowing full well they would hear and understand. Watching Phillip out of the corner of her eye, Zoey tried distracting the wolf using her mouth against the soft skin below his ear, her mind racing for an escape plan. There weren't many options available to her, but Zoey chose the best; it all depended upon the sexy wolf in front of her. "Texas, as much as I love all this foreplay, why don't you buy me a beer while I powder my nose. We can talk about where we go from here when I get back." Soft hands slid down the front of his sculpted body, her eyes locked with his, to hold the bulge in his jeans. Fingers wrapped around the thick, steel rod as best as they could through the denim material. Rather than kiss him, Zoey nipped the skin of his throat, making him growl, before using his body to cover her escape to the ladies room. A well-earned smirk flit across her face when Zoey heard the jingling in her hand. With prize in hand, she started to look for a way out of the bar. She just had to get the hell out of there.

Once inside the bathroom, her heart pounding, Zoey leaned her forehead against her reflection trying to think of a way out of this mess. The sudden noise behind her scared the shit out of her and she jumped, turning around only to come face to face with a drunken human. She smiled at the woman, her jumbled words making her nod even though she could barely understand the slurred speech.

“Isss okay honey. Men ‘r shit.”

In this case, Zoey didn’t agree for most men, but the Hunters scared even her. Especially ones who had something to prove, like Phillip.

“Yeah, they are aren’t they?” Waiting for the woman to leave, Zoey started to pace on the cracked linoleum floor. Phillip and his goons wouldn’t let something like a bathroom door stop them from getting what they wanted. So how the hell was she going to get out of here? Noise from outside the bar made her turn her head toward the frosted pane of glass, located head height on the back wall. Not wasting a single second, Zoey tried the window, praying to the Goddess it was unlocked.

“Oh thank the Goddess,” she muttered, lifting the sash. The cold frigid air drifted into the room before she hoisted herself up and out. Falling into the dirty pile of, well she really didn’t want to know what she had fallen into, Zoey dusted herself off and ran. The keys taken from the hot Wolf’s pocket burned their shape into her hand as if telling her to go back; to trust him. Trust wasn’t something she could afford. Not where Phillip was concerned. She’d made that mistake once. Never again.

Hell on the Heart Excerpt

The woman knew how to dampen his good mood really quick, Pete thought wiping the water from his face. Slowly he stood up, making sure to set the basket on the side table. Anna must have seen the look on his face because she took a step back pickle halfway to her mouth.

“Actually, I do. Could have done without the food getting wet.” He looked down at his jeans that were now plastered to the front of him. There was nothing he hated more than wet denim sticking to his skin. “I think you owe me now. Yes. Definitely owe me a home cooked meal.” Ignoring the sound of protest, he unsnapped the top of his jeans intent on taking off the damp material. There wasn’t a shy bone in his body as he popped the rest of the buttons exposing his black boxers with red hearts on them. The only thing that stopped him was the strangled sound coming from Anna. Her eyes were as big as saucers and she seemed to be sucking on the pickle in her mouth. Mr. Happy gave a jerk from behind his valentine boxers. If only those lush lips were somewhere else.

“Yo, Princess. Dinner.” He grinned watching her nod, eyes riveted to his happy camper, while his were on the fullness of her mouth. Seeing the delicate muscles of her throat working on the juices of the pickle was killing him.

“Yes. Sex. I mean dinner.” Shit but she was gorgeous all flustered. Made him wonder how beautiful she would look lost in passion, and as much as he wanted to let her Freudian slip go, he just couldn’t bring himself to do so.

“Sex and dinner? Now we’re talkin’”

“What? I said nothing about having sex. Especially with you.”

“Yes you did.”

“I did not and you can’t prove that I did.”

“Wanna bet?” He asked pushing his jeans down enough to get her attention. The pickle all but fell out of her hands

“Yes. I mean NO.” He started laughing when she finally gave up on the pickle and covered her eyes with her hand. “You —you’re messing with me. Stop it!”

“Well if you insist blondie. I bet you deny yourself when it comes to the opposite sex. Yep. I think that’s why you’re so mean to me. You want my body. I’m flattered I really am. I mean who wouldn’t want me.” He had said that with a straight face, but he could tell he was getting to her by the way her lips started twitching in laughter. “With all the neat little decorations covering nice defined muscles and let’s not forget the creations granted me with a nice package.”

“Apparently the water wasn’t cold enough.” Her laugh was a musical tone Mr. Happy truly appreciated.

“Aww now don’t be like that. You know you’d like to touch all this with your ruby red lips.” She just doubled over laughing at him. A tiny sniff was all he did in response to her amusement on his behalf. The woman was taking great pleasure in his teasing. His fingers peeled the wet pants the rest of the way off, after he kicked off his work boots. Tossing the damp mess over the porch railing, he sat back down to assess the water damage to his lunch.

Doubled over laughing, she couldn’t believe he was such an arrogant ass. Believing all women would fawn over him, fighting to get to touch him. It made her roll her eyes a time or two. Until she stood up anyway and saw him sitting there in nothing but his too small boxer shorts. Yeah, they were way too small for the package he tried to stuff in them. She felt her face redden but couldn’t keep from staring at him. She wondered what it would feel like to...

“Aw hell you got the book wet Tessa sent,” He grouched at her, shaking some paperback he pulled from the depths of the basket. “and it’s the one I’ve not read yet.” She noticed the cover had some man and woman in a lip lock on some ship. She knew him, Tessa, and Zoey exchanged books. But she had been joking when she had told him to stop reading smut. The man actually read romance books.

“I’ll buy you another book. Gawd no reason to howl over the thing getting wet.” It was kind of comical the way he was smoothing out the pages and all, but she bit her bottom lip this time and kept the giggle wanting to escape inside.  “It’s just a book for goodness sake.”

“Harrumph this coming from a woman who picks weeds out of the garden, and sells them to the town folks, as some herbal remedy to what ails you.”

“I bet I can find one of those weeds to make you feel better about the book too.” She snapped her fingers and the book was like brand new. “Now that I see what you’re reading, it makes sense for your latest conquests be off the street corner.”

“Hey now that’s my future baby’s mama you’re talking about. Although I’m taking applications for the position.” The wiggling of his brows made her shake her head at the man. “Come on I promise not to bite — unless you want me to.” Snapping his pearly whites at her she swore her core clenched at the idea of him doing those things with his mouth, on her body.

“No. I’ve not had my rabies shots this year. Besides I’m sure you have them lined up.” No way would she be just another notch on this man’s belt.

“How much longer?” She nodded toward Ryan and Zoey’s house.

“It will be done by the time they get home. I have some contractors coming out tomorrow to help close it all in so I can start on the inside.” She watched as he tossed a soggy loaf of bread over his shoulder to land with a splat on the ground, she should feel bad about dousing his lunch, but then she wouldn’t haven’t gotten to ogle his physique in boxers. Gods knows it would have been a shame, because he was definitely a nice piece of eye candy.

“Can you show me around?” Another smirk as her eyes memorized every sculpted ab. “Or are you too busy reading your, um book.” She may have conjured a dry book, but every gesture implied he was impotent. “After all, I wouldn’t want your flavor-of-the-night to think you didn’t know how to get it up.”

“Sorry to disappoint but my flavor thinks it’s manly to read all this smut. I bet you’re a newspaper and magazine reader.” Doing some sort flick of his wrist Pete had his jeans back on and the basket, and book gone when he stood up holding his hand out to her.

“Come on little one let me show you the big bad wolf’s cottage. If you huff and puff though it’s not going to fall down.”

Eyes rolled. She couldn’t help it. “You sure your flavor even reads?” Yes, she was being snarky, bitchy even, but she had been burnt by his type so many times. She didn’t trust her instincts anymore.

“What is it you think my flavor type is?” He asked tugging on her hand and dragging her towards the house.

More eye rolls all behind his back, but it took her a moment to answer with so many things to watch out for so that she didn’t trip. “It’s rather obvious. Meek, big breasted, small brained and eager to feed your ego.” The laugh her comment elicited was one of those full belly laughs, almost contagious.

“I think sweet pea you assume a lot.” She almost ran into his muscular backside, when he stopped suddenly, turning around and shine that megawatt smile on her. “I’ll have you know, I much prefer women that are smart and can do more than giggle at everything I say, while sounding like they are out of air. I have no need for ones who just want to screw my brains out because they like my body.”

“But you just claimed every woman wants your body...wow.”  Though the walls were not up, she envisioned what Zoey and Ryan’s house would look like once Pete had finished with it. Wall studs stood just waiting to be enveloped in the arms of this family. “Show me around big boy and we’ll fix your sex life later.”

“My sex life it just fine without your help.” he proceeded to show her where each room was, and what would be located upstairs. The bedrooms and playroom for the kids.

As she looked at the spacious place she could only wish someday that she met someone who would fill a house full of laughter and make it a warm place to curl up under a blanket, watch the snowflakes fall through a frosted glass paned window. She always envisioned herself sitting at a window seat, drinking tea and reading a book her belly filled with child, but it seemed a far off dream.

“Wait, where’s the workshop?” She narrowed her eyes at Pete. “Is this one of those changes you and Ryan were conspiring about? Zoey told us you might try to change things.” The table, with plans laid out beckoned. Even though she didn’t have a clue as to what she was looking at, Anna unrolled the blueprints looking for changes.

Pete’s hand slapped down over top of the paper, to block her view of the lines and scribbles.

“Now why worry your pretty little head about these. There is a workshop.” Anna narrowed her eyes at him before jerking the prints out from under his hand. He could tell by the way she turned them every which way, she didn’t know how to read them. Standing there, arms crossed, he chuckled letting her muddle through before having enough of her high handedness. “Let’s not overtax your brain shall we.”

Just as he expected she stammered like a fish with no water. He reached out and tipped her chin up to close her mouth, taking the papers out of her grasp and rolled them up.

“If you follow me I’ll show you where it is before you get lock jaw.” She snorted, following him towards the back of the house where the frame of the greenhouse, and the workshop stood. Zoey had originally wanted them on the side of the house, but he and Ryan agreed it would be more in lines with the house if it butted up against the tree line.

He watched her as she walked in the framed in rooms, for a sprite little thing, she shone like the sun as she looked at the two buildings. With maybe just a little envy on her part too, not that he blamed her. Ryan was so enamored of Zoey, he’d give her the moon if he could. They had the kind of relationship Pete could only dream about or watch on television. The fates had played a cruel hand and decided he wasn’t good enough to garner such a life.

Part of him wondered what it would feel like to love a woman so profoundly, living the life he had was a lonely existence. All the assumptions Anna had made about him were partially true. Although he wouldn’t admit he like the occasional company of a woman such as her over the air heads she described. Being a Djinn and living as long as he had, in its own way, created who he had become. And arrogant man, full of pride and no home to call his own.

“Zoey said this was going to be on the side, not the back.” She informed him brushing saw dust off her hands.

“I know. But you missed the big boys telling her it would be better suited where it’s going.”

“You know she’s going to have you and Ryan’s ass if this isn’t like she wanted it.” It was his turn to roll his eyes at her and maneuver her back towards the garden where she could pick her herbs.

“Trust me I know. I’ve seen her in action. Now try not to trip over the nail boxes on your way out.”

“Yeah, yeah.” She waved him off. Chauvinistic butthead. “When you’re ready for help painting let me know.”

Shit. Why had she said offered to help? It would mean being around him all day and it was already hard enough to keep from taking him up on that offer from earlier right then and there. It was either that or strangle him, and at the moment, she was willing to put her hands around his neck—to choke him. Though it would be funny to see what Zoey was going to do to him once she discovered her workshop and greenhouse moved without her say so. Not that she would go against her friend, but she had to admit, both buildings did look better. Almost as if the workshop and greenhouse were part of the wood instead of separated.

“I’ll make a deal with you,” she smirked at his narrowed eyes. “I’ll buy you dinner if you help me pull the ‘weeds’ from the garden.”

“Wait let me make sure I get the terms of this dinner proposal of yours. I go kneel in the garden of Eden and pull sticks. In return you feed me dinner in town at the local eatery? Why not? Let me grab a shirt so the bugs don’t think I taste sugary sweet and bite me.”  He took a step towards her and the warmth of his body, plus all the bare skin made her heart stutter. She didn’t realize she leaned into the musky scent until he pulled back with his white t-shirt in hand a smug look on his face of catching her in the act of inhaling.  “As for the offer of helping me paint, be here next Friday butt crack of dawn.”

Excerpt

CHAPTER 1

I jumped out of bed at the very last second, took a quick shower, threw on some clothes and raced downstairs. As my mom nagged me about the time, I shoved a piece of toast in my mouth, washed it down with some OJ, then dashed out the door seconds before the school bus pulled up. As usual, my fellow classmates were taunting the new kid, Roger, and Mr. Gilbert, the bus driver, was yelling out his customary, “Knock it off!” at them. I flopped down in an empty seat at the back of the bus and let out a frustrated groan. Could my life be any more boring?

I dragged my feet as I made my way into Mrs. Clark’s history class and claimed my usual seat.  Whose bright idea was it to make history first period? Staying conscious while Mrs. Clark rambled on about a bunch of dead people who changed the world was near impossible. I slid farther down in my chair and was about to initiate full zone-out mode when Sam walked into class.

An electric jolt zapped me upright—I could smell her. The scent quickened my pulse and sent my heartbeat skyrocketing. My mouth watered as a feverish hunger growled in the pit of my stomach. It wasn’t her perfumed skin or freshly shampooed hair. No, it was musky and unpleasant. It got under my skin, and I found it terribly distracting.

As Sam caught me staring, a proud smirk washed over her face. She tossed her golden-blonde hair over her shoulder and slid her slender body into the wooden desk in front of me, then turned around and locked eyes with me, her smug grin widening.

I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Her distracting aroma swiftly traveled up my nose, lighting up my brain. Shivers scurried down my spine, spinning my head…what was that smell?

As Sam tugged playfully on my hair, she whispered, “I’ve been waiting forever for you to notice me, Brandon.” She paused, looking me up and down. “Meet me after class on the front steps.”

I didn’t hesitate to agree. “Okay.”

She winked. “I have a surprise for you.”

My stomach flip flopped and my palms grew sweaty. Surprise? I had no idea what she meant, but I sure as hell was gonna find out.

Sam’s smell manipulated my brain, blurring Mrs. Clark’s words together. Once, I got wasted at one of my parents’ Christmas parties. I’d chugged down every half-finished glass of beer, wine, or hard liquid abandoned on the table to the point where my head spun out of control. Sam’s scent mimicked that same effect. I wanted to gorge on it, whatever it was. The sudden ring of the school bell, announcing the end of first period, snapped me out of the muddled fog.

Sam touched my shoulder and whispered, “You go first and I’ll meet you there.”

I obeyed and headed straight for the front steps with my heartbeat throbbing inside my throat.

The breeze carried her fragrance. She was behind me; I knew it. My knees wobbled as I turned around.

Sam was inches from me, batting her eyelashes and smiling. She giggled and seized my trembling hand. “Come with me.” She steered me toward the park and away from the vigilant eyes at the school. Within the boundaries of the trees and their interlocking branches, we sat, facing each other.

“What’s my surprise?” I asked, my breath speeding up.

“A kiss.” She grinned sheepishly, then planted her lips over mine.

That smell of hers hammered at the inner walls of my brain. Every muscle twitched, and heat spread over my skin. I pulled away and blurted out, “What’s that smell? It’s driving me crazy!”

She flinched, and her cheeks flushed bright red. “You can smell me?”

“Yes.”

“I…I don’t know what to say. This is so embarrassing.” She looked away from me. “I’m on my period,” she whispered.

That was it—blood! Rich, dark, delicious blood! Wait, blood?  Delicious? Was it? I jammed my fingertips into my temples. Her scent was screwing with my head, but I had to taste her. Cupping her face, I kissed her hard and bit her tongue. Warm, coppery blood spilled into my mouth, bringing to life a slew of delightful shivers.

Her high-pitched squeal struck my eardrums, but I didn’t care. Her fluids overpowered all my senses. I swished her blood between my teeth, like mouthwash, before spitting it into the palm of my hand. A thick, gooey, red substance coated my fingers. Its power hypnotized me and…altered me. I hungered after it. My tongue darted out of my mouth and snatched up the blood staining my skin. Upon my virgin swallow, I released the low growl swelling in my throat. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of her. Her face had turned a shade of ghastly-white, and her eyes bulged out of their sockets. She opened her mouth wide, blasting out another petrified shriek. It echoed inside my ears, yanking me back to reality. I held my hands up and backed away from her, shaking my head. “I’m so sorry. Please forgive me…I’m so sorry.”

She scrambled to her feet, gave my shin a swift kick, and shouted, “Freak!” As she ran away, she threatened, “I’m going to tell everyone what you did.  Everyone!”

I wandered the park aimlessly with my thoughts spiraling. I bit her! Why, why, why? The blood…it made me do it! My feet stumbled to a grinding halt. Her blood coerced me; I knew it with every ounce of my being. Was that even impossible? Was I losing my mind? I had to get away from the school. I grabbed my cell and called my mom.

She picked up on the second ring. “Brandon, why aren’t you in class?” Her voice sounded strained. “Is something wrong?”

“I’m sick, Mom.” My voice cracked. “P–Please come get me.”

“Of course, honey.”

“Hurry.”

“Ten minutes, if that,” she answered in a lulling tone. “Don’t worry.”

My shoulders quaked, threatened by a wall of tears building behind my eyelids. For the second time that day, I waited on the front steps of the school, a different person—a person who craved blood—a freak!

As my mom’s car turned into the parking lot, I bolted toward it. The car hadn’t even come to a complete stop when I yanked on the handle and slid inside.

She gave me a heartfelt look, then immediately placed her hand to my forehead. “No fever, so that’s good. How is it you don’t feel well?”

Looking into her eyes made me want to ball like a baby. I looked away, then shuddered. “I ache all over.”

Again, she touched my forehead, then each cheek. “I’ll make you some soup when we get home.” She paused, then added, “Your sister’s going to be jealous.”

Soup wasn’t going to fix my problem, and I certainly couldn’t tell my mom I’d bit a girl’s tongue. I couldn’t tell my sister either. I couldn’t tell anyone. I forced a smile and glanced at her. “Soup sounds good. Better make enough for Lindsey or she’ll be really jealous.”

Her vivacious laugh filled my ears. “You’re probably right.”

As the car pulled away from the school, the knot twisting my stomach relaxed; though, the gruesome act of biting Sam was less forgiving. The image was forever etched into my brain. I sank deeper into the seat and shuddered.

My mom glanced at me with a line of concern pinching her forehead. “Are you all right?”

That was the million-dollar question. I heaved a sigh. “My head’s pounding. I just want to lie down.”

“Thank goodness we live so close.” She shook her head and her frown deepened. “This came on so sudden. When you dashed out of the house this morning, you were fine.”

I shrugged my shoulders.  I was fine, until Sam changed things. Turning onto our street, she added, “I hate it when my kids get sick.”

“I’ll be okay.” I lied, but my mom needed the reassurance.

“Of course you will.”

As my mom pulled into our driveway, I pushed open my door. I didn’t even wait for her to kill the car’s engine before I was hurrying into the house with large strides, running up the stairs and into my room. I flopped onto my bed and buried my face in my pillow. The sobs I’d been fighting all day gained on me. My eyelids gave way to the mounting pressure behind them, spilling hot tears down my cheeks and drenching the pillowcase. My mom walked in during the height of my waterworks display. I quickly swiped at my face, brushing away the tears before sitting up.

“Brandon, honey, take a sip of 7UP,” she said, sitting next to me and handing me a can of soda.

I shoved the soda aside on the nightstand, then latched onto her, letting my tears flow again. “Tell me I’m not a horrible person,” I cried.

Her arms came around me in a loving embrace. “Why in the world would you say such a thing?” She cupped my face in the palms of her hands. “You’re my prefect sixteen-year-old son.”

My breath hitched inside my chest as I thought of the why. “I don’t know. I just…I just need some sleep.”

My mom pulled two round white pills from her sweater pocket, then reached for the 7UP. “Here’s two aspirin.” She stroked my head, then rose from the bed. “I’ll start the soup. Try to rest while it’s cooking.” She quietly closed the door, leaving me alone.

I washed down the pills and fell back onto the pillows, my gaze drifting toward the ceiling. Sam’s horrified face spread across it and I jerked my eyes away, burying my face into a pillow. Sam, I’m so sorry. She’d never forgive me. I couldn’t forgive myself. There was no forgiving what I’d done. What kind of person bites another person? A freak, that’s who.

A Google search could pinpoint what was wrong with me. I glanced at my laptop resting on my desk and shivered. Bad idea. Searching the internet for reasons why someone craved blood might uncover something far worse.

A rock of fear landed in the pit of my stomach. I bolted into my bathroom and splashed cold water on my face. I caught my reflection in the mirror as I toweled off the clammy sweat and stared hard, searching for the slightest change—same hazel eyes, sandy-brown hair, and dimpled cheeks looked back at me. I didn’t see a freak or a monster, just me.

I wandered back to my bed and sank deeper into the pillows. The feather-down cradled me, programming my brain to shut down and summon sleep. My eyelids grew heavy, sliding down over my eyes like curtains.  I didn’t fight it and drifted off.

The creak of my bedroom door sounded inside my head like an alarm. My eyelids fluttered and slowly opened, my vision coming into focus. My sister stood in the doorway, her school books tucked under her arm.  “What do you want, Lins?”

Lindsey bounced into my room, unloaded her books on my desk, before sitting on the edge of it.  As she twirled a strand of her brownish-blonde hair around her finger, her big green eyes studied me. “You really sick or just faking?”

What I wouldn’t give to be faking the whole mess. I rolled my eyes. “I’m not faking.”

She plastered one of those ‘I don’t believe you’ looks on her face and heaved a sigh as her shoulders sagged. “I hate high school.”

That was so Lindsey; everything was always about her. I leaned against the headboard and folded my arms. “Why?”

“I was so popular in junior high. Everyone knew me or wanted to know me. Now, I’m at the bottom of the fish bowl, like scum. My social status is non-existent.”

I couldn’t help but smirk. “Social status, really?  Lins, you’re fourteen.”

She turned her nose up at me. “Like sixteen’s old. Besides, I happen to like being popular.” She pouted. “Ninth grade sucks.”

“Eleventh grade isn’t any easier,” I pointed out. “The twelfth graders have all the power.”

“Hmph. It just isn’t fair.” She paused, scrunching her eyebrows together. “Something’s really wrong with you, isn’t there?  You’re doing that thing with your forehead.”

I swiped a hand across my brow. “What thing?”

“Pulsating the vein in the center of your forehead.” She shuddered. “Gross. You always do it when you’re stressing out.”

I waved her off. Truth be told, though, I was in major stress mode. A whiff of chicken turned my head toward the doorway. Mom entered, carrying a breakfast tray.

“Ready for some soup?” She set the tray of steaming chicken noodle soup, soda crackers, and another can of 7UP next to me on the bed. “I came up earlier, but you were asleep.”

I licked my lips. “So ready.”

She touched her hand to my forehead. “Still no fever. That’s good, honey. Eat your soup and get some rest.”

Lindsey leaned in and took a deep breath. “Mom, that smells delish.”

“There’s plenty more downstairs.” She smoothed Lindsey’s hair and gave her a smile. “Why don’t you join me downstairs for a bowl.”

Lindsey jumped off my bed and scooped up her books. “Totally.” She glanced back at me. “Feel better.”

“Thanks, Lins.”

“I’ll check in on you later,” Mom said, then followed Lindsey out of my room and shut the door behind her.

I scarfed down the soup and crackers, then chugged half the can of 7UP. I pushed the tray aside and let out huge sigh. Once more, I fell back onto the pillows and closed my eyes.

****

I woke to a dark room. A shaft of moonlight cut through the curtains, stretching across the room and shining right in my face, letting me know it was still night. I rolled over to the opposite side of my bed and pulled the covers over my head, blocking out the light. An empty feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. It wasn’t hunger, it was the thought of school. I dreaded staring into Sam’s unforgiving eyes, and all the pairs of eyes of the people she’d told. I’d tell her I’d contracted a disease, and maybe I had. The creak of my bedroom door shattered my thoughts. Mom entered and flipped on the light, causing me to flinch. I can’t go to school tomorrow. I just can’t.

“Brandon, how are you feeling?” Mom asked, touching her hand to my forehead for the hundredth time.

Her warm fingers pulsated with thick, rich, tasty blood against my skin. No, not again!  I jerked away from her and scrambled to the opposite side of the room, sinking to the floor. She hurried after me, a thumping vibration following her. The suffocating hum wrapped around my brain, growing louder and louder. I slammed my hands over my ears and wailed.

“Brandon, what’s wrong?” Mom dropped to her knees in front of me, her hands latching onto my arms. “Oh my God, you’re shivering.”

The thumping was coming from her—her heartbeat! Every crushing thud swelled inside my chest, sucking the air from my lungs. I squished a hand between us and pried her away, but she only clung tighter as she screamed for my dad.

With her cry for help, his footsteps pounded against the carpeted stairs as he rushed to her aid.  As my dad charged into my room, the thumping magnified. I sat there, imprisoned on the floor, convulsing with each beat of their hearts. The room grew fuzzy as my vision blurred. Lindsey’s panicked squeal filled my ears, then all sound faded away to nothing.

The next time I opened my eyes, I was back in bed. A shaft of light from the hallway penetrated through the opening of my bedroom door, while multiple heartbeats sounded off inside my ears. I rolled over to face the doorway. My mom and Dr. Erickson, our next-door neighbor, stood just outside my room, wearing green hospital scrubs. She must have caught him either going to the hospital or just getting home. They spoke in hushed tones. I couldn’t make out every word, but I caught something about oxygen to the brain and low blood pressure.

This wasn’t any kind of illness. This was some sick craving for blood, and the second time it had manipulated me. Would there be more? How far would I go to satisfy the need? Would I resort to violence again? Would I hurt my parents, or Lindsey? A thin layer of sweat coated my skin as I twisted the sheets between my clammy fists. “Never!” I shouted.

My mom popped her head in. “I’ll be right there, Brandon.” She faced Dr. Erickson and squeezed his hands. “John, I can’t thank you enough for stopping by and checking on Brandon.”

“No need to thank me, Diane, but keep that appointment.”

“Yes, of course.”

“Goodnight. Call me anytime.” He gave her a nod and went on his way.

She hurried to my bedside, that motherly look of concern tugging at her eyebrows. “Honey, how are you feeling?”

“Tired…weak.” Scared I’m turning into a bloodthirsty monster.

She patted my hand. “Dr. Erickson reached out to Dr. Stewart. We’ve got an appointment with him tomorrow morning at nine.”

I heaved an exaggerated sigh in protest. “Do I have to go? You know how he is. He’ll run every test in the world.”

The motherly look intensified. “You gave me and your father, not to mention Lindsey, quite a scare. The subject is not up for debate. You’re going.” Her face softened, and she planted a kiss on my cheek. “Close those gorgeous hazel eyes and get some rest.” She stared at me for several seconds before leaving my side.

As she closed my door, I shuddered. If she knew the truth, she’d haul my ass to the nuthouse instead of the family physician.

Once more, my door opened halfway. Lindsey peeked around the frame. “Can I come in?”

That was a first. She never asked. I must’ve really freaked her out by fainting. “Yeah, sure.”

She approached my bed, stopping inches away. Her face twisted like she was in pain. “You scared me.” Her voice was gentle and soft, lacking its usual self-centeredness.

I put on my most thoughtful expression. “I didn’t mean to scare you, or Mom, or Dad. Mom says I’ve got to go to see Dr. Stewart tomorrow.”

“That’s probably a good thing. He’ll go all test happy and find what’s wrong.”

I busted out laughing. “That’s what I said.” I let myself get serious and lowered my voice. “I’m kind of scared. What if there’s something wrong with me, something that can’t be fixed?”

She nudged my shoulder. “It’ll be okay. Don’t worry.”

“What if it’s not?”

She locked her gaze on me. “It will. You’re my big brother, and I need you.”

I cracked a smile. “You mean, you need someone to boss around.”

A giggle escaped her, and more seemed to struggle to get out before she shook them off and held her chin high. “Not true.”

I let out a bemused huff. “Yeah, right. You’ve been bossing me around since you learned to talk. When we lived in that tiny apartment and had to share a room, you claimed top bunk and ordered me to sleep on the bottom bunk. Remember?”

She shuddered, then rubbed her arms. “That bedroom was haunted. I’ll never forget that girl’s voice humming that lullaby. No way was I sleeping on the bottom where she could pop out from under the bed and grab me.”

I rolled my eyes and waved her away. “I told you then and I’m telling you now, it was Mom.  She was probably standing outside our door, trying to get us to go to sleep.”

“That voice had come from inside our room, and it wasn’t Mom. It was a ghost,” she insisted with a firm nod.

My gaze drifted toward the ceiling as I conjured up the past, then I faced her. “It didn’t sound ghostlike or creepy to me. It had more of a calming effect as I remember.”

She jutted her chin in my direction. “Maybe for you.”

I released a low sigh. “Well, right now, I could use that calming lullaby.”

“Everything will be okay,” she said again, then hugged me.

I hugged her back, and longer than normal before releasing her. “Thanks, Lins. It’s late, go back to sleep. I’ll be fine.”

She searched my eyes. “You’re sure?”

I waved her toward the door. “I’m sure.”

“Okay.” She kept her gaze on me as she backed up into the doorway. A half-smile came to her lips before she closed the door, leaving me alone.

After staring at the ceiling for quite some time, sleep finally took over and Sam entered my dreams. She lay motionless beneath me as I hunched over her like a crazed animal. I’d ripped her apart, limb by limb, my face buried inside her open wounds, guzzling mouthfuls of blood.

My eyelids flew open and I scurried off my bed, flipping on the light, the nightmare still fresh in my mind. My heartbeat throbbed inside my throat as I skimmed over my room. Familiar surroundings fell into my sightlines; my guitars, rock-n-roll memorabilia, skateboards, and gaming equipment. I wiped the sweat off my forehead, trembling, and sank to the floor. Tears rushed forward and spilled down my cheeks as I feared the significance behind my nightmare.

PROMO: Save the World Giveaway

How You Can Save the World and Enter to Win a $175 Prize Pack!

“If you like action-packed adventure books that will keep you reading well into the wee hours, I would recommend The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh.”
–Jennly Reads

To celebrate the release of my second action adventure The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh, I’m offering up my largest prize pack to date! But, first let me tell you about the book…
When it came to writing The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh, I wanted to create a story in the same vein as City of Gold, maintaining what reviewers described as “a fast-paced action adventure” that is “akin to an Indiana Jones story set in modern times.” So in this second installment, archaeologist and adventurer Matthew Connor and his two closest friends set off for Egypt to save the world. I even splashed in a bit of the police action my readers know and love.
“Why does the world need saving?” you may ask, possibly skeptical. Well, an old friend and colleague of Matthew’s has discovered ancient hieroglyphics that hint at the whereabouts of an ancient Egyptian tomb and a mysterious treasure that is said to contain the knowledge of the universe. Beyond that, it can grant humans the ability to traverse Heaven and Earth, and it bestows whoever possesses it with great wealth and wisdom. Now, imagine something like that falling into the hands of terrorists or world powers set on domination… Needless to say, it could lead to global annihilation!
My hope is that The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh will provide readers with a thrill ride that digs into the depths of human nature when one is tempted by power. But if you’re looking for a slow build, this isn’t the book for you. Readers are immediately thrown into the heat of Egypt’s Western Desert, where Matthew’s friend Alexandria Leonard is about to make a life-altering discovery.
Here’s a snippet from the prologue of The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh (Matthew Connor Adventure series):

The sun had barely broken the horizon, but Alex was wide-awake and strapped into her safety harness. She had dreamed of this moment her entire life, and now that it was becoming reality, she could hardly believe it. Here she was at the age of forty and leading her first archaeological dig in Egypt’s Western Desert. Even more incredible was the fact that she and her team were on the brink of a monumental discovery.
They had detected a manmade tunnel that ran thirty-five feet beneath the ground and over 3,600 feet to the east. Where the tunnel ended, there was in a large open space that the ground-penetrating radar couldn’t identify.
Alex stood at the opening of the hole with her site foreman, Jeff Webb; a hieroglyphics expert named Jasper Blair; and two of four laborers, Seth and Timal. They would be responsible for lowering her down.
She took a deep breath, preparing her mind for the descent and the cramped space. Her team had only dug out a well of about four feet in diameter. The position she was in when she went down would be the way she’d stay, as there would be no room to flip over.
She wiped the back of her arm across her forehead to wick away the sweat that kept dripping down her face. She pinched her eyes shut, wishing she had her favorite blue sweatband from high school, when wearing one had been all the rage—back around the time when belonging to a Tape of the Month Club was the thing to do.
She let her long, blond hair down from the ponytail she’d had it in and redid it, tighter this time, pulling it into a messy bun. Back home in northern Michigan, she rarely put her hair up, reserving that for times when she was focused on her work or studies, but in this part of the world, she often wore it up. Even a warm breeze on the back of her neck was better than none at all.
“Good thing you skipped the second course last night,” Jeff teased her.
Not that size was an issue for either of them. She was lean and athletic, and while Jeff had a solid build, he was trim with narrow shoulders.
“Same goes for you,” she tossed back with a smile. She’d known him for years and worked on several digs with him. He’d been the one who had removed two of the stone bricks from the tunnel’s ceiling to create the small opening through which they could descend. He’d been down there to set up a radio module and transmitting antenna that enabled communication between whoever was underground and whoever was on the surface.
Jeff moved behind her and tightened her harness. “Ah!” She sucked air in through gritted teeth. “Maybe just leave enough room for me to breathe.”
He loosened the restraints slightly. “Good?”
She managed to slip her fingers between the straps and her rib cage. “It’ll do.”
He turned to face her again. “Here’s your radio.” Jeff handed her an earpiece that worked with the radio he’d put in place.
“Talk into it for me,” he told her.
She tapped a button on the earpiece and said, “Hello, hello, hello.” She smirked at her mock echo.
Jeff laughed. “I heard you loud and clear. In surround sound, actually. All right, one more thing.” He popped a miner hat on her head, and she fastened the chin strap. “I think it’s best if we lower you feetfirst so that you can be positioned upright in the tunnel.” Jeff’s demeanor became serious.
Alex nodded and looked down again. It was a good thing that she wasn’t claustrophobic or afraid of being suspended by a rope and lowered helplessly into the ground. And while she might not battle with many fears, part of her was as terrified as she was excited about the prospect of setting foot where no one—besides Jeff briefly—had likely been in thousands of years. But this was just meant to be a brief look-see, and she’d be going solo. When she set out in earnest to explore the tunnel, she’d take members of her team with her.
She reached for the gold chain around her neck and pinched the tiny pendant that dangled from it. The Eye of Horus, also known as the Eye of Ra, was an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection. Out here in the desert, she needed all the help she could get. She kissed it and tucked it back beneath her shirt.
“Are you ready?” Jeff asked.
She met Jeff’s eyes and flicked on the headlamp. “I’m ready.”
Jeff pulled an LED flare from his back pocket, turned it on, and tossed it into the hole. Watching the light descend emphasized just how far down it was to the tunnel.
Once it hit the ground, Jeff rolled his hand toward Seth and Timal. “You heard her. Down she goes.”
More sweat dripped from her brow, and she wiped her forehead again. And things were just heating up out here—if you could call already being a hundred degrees “just heating up.” As it was, waves of heat were cutting through the air like ribbons on the horizon, and it was only eight o’clock in the morning.
She looked around at her crew, steadying her thoughts and locking on to her resolve to make history. Great men and women made a habit of stepping outside their comfort zones, living on the edge, and testing out unchartered waters. And she wanted to be among them, to make a difference in the world by unearthing what remained of long gone great empires. Sometimes that required delving into the unknown.
She shook her fanciful musings aside. After all, they may not have discovered anything more than an empty tunnel.
She sat on the ledge, dangling her legs inside the hole. She tugged on the rope secured to her harness, which was connected to a rigging system that Seth and Timal would use to lower her. She glanced at Seth and Timal, confident in their abilities to guide her safely down and back up again. And with one more look at Jeff, she pushed off, letting herself become suspended.
Her heart thumped against her rib cage as she was lowered. She reached out and touched the makeshift walls that her men had put in place to prevent a cave-in. Her fingertips brushed against some sand, and it was slightly cool to the touch, but the air around her was still hot. A few of the granules sprinkled down the shaft.
About six feet beneath the ground, she felt incredibly alone. Although, it was also quiet and peaceful.
As Jeff’s form continued to become smaller above her and the space she was in became more shadowed, brief apprehension lanced through her. But the allure of what lie ahead silenced her anxiety.

If you can take the heat, grab your hat and sunscreen and strap yourself in for an unforgettable adventure. Order your copy of The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh today.

Blog Tour: The Water Lord

Political Suspense
Date Published: To Be Determined
Publisher: Dead Tree Publishing

A town has gone dry, and the general manager of a water district is found dead, presumably a suicide. His crazed widow is in denial and recklessly loose-lipped. Texas House District 100 is again in turmoil, and the interests of the landed class against urban sprawl are at odds.

Enter John David Dothan (The Representative). The world’s hippest legislator is back, but he is a changed man. Post-stroke Dothan dons an eccentric cane and is married to his former chief of staff, Tryphena Taylor. The two lovers reside peacefully tucked away in a country cottage with their rescued cat. But they are swimming against the tide.

Caught between the past and the future, the rural and the urban, the representative is trapped in a no-win situation both politically and emotionally. When a constituent brings to his attention a mysterious ‘retention pond’ things grow increasingly murky. The waters turn completely dark when Dothan learns his forbidden first love, former State Senator Rachael Logan has been hospitalized.

Armed with only his cane and sidekick, Mason Dixon (The District Manager), who serves as his new Chief of Staff, Dothan sets aside the ambiguities of politics and love in search of clarity and righteousness. But the cost of doing the right thing might not just be his young marriage…but Tryphena’s life.

Review

Matt Minor has great attention to detail and makes everything from the setting, to the characters feel very real. It makes for a wonderfully written and very suspenseful novel.

Definitely fast paced and filled with surprising moments. A solid Suspense.

I'm not an overly politcal person myself, but I was able to understand the political aspects of hte novel. I think Minor does a great job of allowing those not as familiar understand the story and get the basics of the political part of the story.
