The Shattering of Kingdoms, Book 1
Break the Code. Shatter the World.

Centuries ago, the murder of a beloved king tore apart the Kingdom of Caledun. The land was plunged into chaos and thousands perished in the aftermath. A new order was established in an attempt to return Caledun to its former glory. It failed, but in its place rose the beginnings of the Code.

During this same period, the mystical caretakers of the Great Wood retreated from the world of Kal Maran, their disappearance an ominous harbinger of the suffering that was to follow. The Great Wood now grows out of control. Cities, towns, and villages have fallen before the relentless march of the forest. Without the former guardians to keep her tame, the wood has become a place of peril, and dark creatures of legend now hunt beneath its leaves.

The summer season is now a time of armed conflict. The fall of the old monarchy has brought about a ceaseless cycle of combat. Grievances are settled by the strict tenets of a binding Mercenary Code and the men who would die to preserve its honour.

However, change is in the air. Political rivalries have escalated, and dire rumblings of a revolution abound. Thrust to the forefront of the shattered land's politics, a mercenary fights for more than just riches. In the north, a borderland soldier wrestles with his own demons and looks to find his true purpose. And in the shadow of the Great Wood, a young man's chance encounter with a strange visitor gives hope to a land divided.

Excerpt
chapter IX

Bider’s gaze wandered over the assembled enemy troops camped beyond bow range on the outskirts of the city. At least a thousand men lay to the west, another four hundred were guarding any attempt at a sortie from the south gate. A dozen distinct banners flapped in the strong wind, with each company standard easy to distinguish from Bider’s elevated vantage point. He studied the banners and counted only one northern company among the groups to the south. Most were unfamiliar him, and his eyes settled uneasily on the symbol of the black hyena belonging to Khali’s Reavers.

Nudging Orn, Bider gestured out towards the standard. “What’s the story behind the Reavers?” he asked. “You’ve been around since the early days of the Fey’Derin.”

“The Reavers are a bad lot,” Orn said, spitting over the wall. “A very bad lot.”

“That’s what I know, not what I want to hear,” Bider pressed.

Orn gave his companion a deliberate once over before answering. “Over the last century or so, there have been several unspoken rules in our profession,” he began, “One, is to always minimize casualties of the innocent, especially women and children. Another is to always accord captured officers fair and just treatment. Although such rules were never written into the Code, mercenary companies don’t take kindly to torturers —”

“So Khali’s men tortured officers?” Bider interrupted with alarm.

“If you’re going to interrupt, I’ll stop right here and now,” Orn growled. “Now are you going to shut that trap of yours or not?”

“Yes, sorry.” Bider answered timidly.

“As I was saying, there are several actions that are widely frowned upon. The last revolves around a company’s base of operations during the winter months. Be it a temporary encampment, or a permanent home city, it matters not. You leave the men and their families alone. There’s plenty of time for killing when the spring arrives.” Pausing to take a long sip from his ever-present flask, Orn shot Bider a suspicious look. “You won’t say anything to the Captain now will you?” he glared.

“Not as long as I hear this story …” Bider responded carefully.

“Well, it was three seasons ago, the year before you came on as a recruit, and the company was staying south for the winter. It was the first time the Captain chose not to take us back north to Briar, instead planning to stay near the eastern edge of the Caeronwood. Sergeant Fenton and the Lieutenant left the autumn campaign early with our newest recruits and built a relatively comfortable camp for the men. Rumours began to swirl by season’s end that a few southern companies had been contracted out later than the usual, and many mercenaries across the region speculated at what might be developing. Seems a few of the nobles in the Protectorate territories held the northern companies in some contempt, deeming them unfit to fight in southern lands.”

“But the Code states that the whole of Kal Maran is fit for any company to do battle,” Bider retorted.

“That’s right, but it doesn’t mean it sits well with some of the noblemen hereabouts. The Code isn’t perfect, and men’s hearts can be easily twisted, even by the most mundane of things,” Orn continued. “After the Battle of Cobourne, where the Fey’Derin fought for Lord Erion Brawn, word escaped that an early winter bounty was out on our company. It seems the Captain’s choice of employer over the years had angered certain factions, most notably Lord Yarr and his ally Duke Garius of Imlaris.”

“I’m not familiar with that name.” Bider said.

“He paid a large price to spearhead the campaign against our recruits. They hit the camp before we could muster our strength and warn them. That twelve of the fifty-six men survived, including Lieutenant Burnaise, is something of a miracle. It was a slaughter, and our young men had no chance. Bran, that big brute of an Axeman, still sports a nasty scar under that beard of his, but at least he survived, unlike many of his friends.”

“And it was Khali’s men that attacked?” Bider hesitated to ask.

“Aye, it was. They showed no quarter. Women who had arrived from the north or sweethearts from the nearby towns, it mattered little. Khali’s men murdered them all. Sergeant Fenton died trying to protect his young son and wife,” Orn replied gloomily.

“The Captain was cold that day. He showed no emotion, and yet we all knew he was hurting. His vengeance was swift and as unmerciful as the unjust attack. He mustered half the company and ambushed Garius as he travelled between cities. No one walked away from that battle unscarred. Captain Silveron ignored the man’s pleas for mercy and took his head, sending it in a box to Gadian Yarr.  Then we travelled north, taking a winding road through the Erienn mountain range, passing by Dragon Mount and the Silveryn Mages.”

“And the Reavers?” Bider asked, entranced by the sorrow etched in the storyteller’s words.

“We fought them the following season. Sergeant McConnal nearly destroyed their vanguard single-handedly, and the Captain, well he was both terrifying and awe-inspiring to behold. We haven’t seen those bastards in well over a year now, and it’s all any of us involved in that ambush can do to hold our tempers in check. There’s a reckoning still to come. The Captain swore on those dead men that he would kill the man who coldly slaughtered those innocents, and if I know the Captain, that day is coming.” Orn hung his head as he finished, staring solemnly at the ground.

A long moment passed, and Bider felt a pang of guilt knowing that he had reopened old wounds. Ignoring Orn as he took a second and then third pull from his silver flask, Bider slipped down the stone staircase and left his friend alone with his thoughts.

"We belong to the earth, Lainie-Bug. We were sent here in human form for a reason. If you don’t know what to do, then just be human."

Right. Like that was ever a simple thing to do.

Simple would be finishing high school without that desolate music trickling through the cracks in my dreams, making me too tired to study.

Simple would be telling Noah his girlfriend smells like last week’s dim sims without second-guessing my own reasons for not liking her.

Simple would be keeping the mining company from trespassing on our sheep farm.

Perhaps for a human, those things would be simple. No wonder I could never quite get the hang of it. Then again, a simple life would have never let me feel the flames of the sacred spinning sword, or breathe the fragrance of the Garden, or sink my teeth into the Living Fruit from the Tree of Life…

Sample Chapter from Songlines Book 1

High above the ground, the Sentinel stood right on the point of the tree branch between where her weight was supported easily and the bendy region where a sudden movement would surely send her to her death again.

The view was spectacular enough to distract her for quite some time, and she soaked it in as greedily as her lungs soaked in air – scented with pine and honey and blossoms – as she recovered from the climb. Under her feet, helpful rustling reminded her how deeply she was loved and cherished here, as the tree began to redirect its energy into growing faster beneath her toes, the branch thickening and strengthening with miraculous speed. The timeless pine hungered to keep her safe at least as much as it hungered for the sweet nectar of warm sunlight. Deep textured wisdom flowed up through the core of its massive trunk, tasting the atmosphere to assess her needs as well as its own.

She brushed her fingertips across the tips of the pine needles. Their scent tripped threads of elusive memories – Christmas trees on Christmas mornings with ACDC echoing across the backyard and Dad yelling at Mum to turn it down and Mum yelling back that he must be getting old and would he like a glass of sherry and Dad teasing her back by saying he’d prefer a shandy… but those memories were best left behind. Still, something tugged at her, from the east, demanding her attention in a place where demands were meaningless. Something forgotten, and uncomfortable to dwell on. Something that made her want to stay distracted enough not to have to think about it, and death was very distracting.

Above her head, sparrows flicked around tiny gusts of air with each wing beat, throwing in random bursts of speed every time there was a hint of a pause in their song like they were playing musical chairs. Smiling, she pulled a slightly squished piece of Fruit from where it had been tucked under her belt, and then she launched herself from the branch, up towards the graceful sky.

Adrenaline washed away her lingering discomfort as she plummeted past the base of the tree and down into the rocky gorge that it leant out over. Remnant reflexes from another world caused her to gasp, and for a second her limbs became rigid in response to her body’s perceived danger, but that only lasted for a few moments. She inhaled sweet life to drown the memories, and then let her breath out again with a laugh as she noticed the sparrows trying to follow her, unable to fall nearly as well with their hollow bones. Poor little things. Spreading her arms and legs in glorious celebration, she flew downwards faster than she could move in any other game, wishing she could somehow break the laws of gravity and move even more quickly. Except then it wouldn’t last as long. As it was, the ground was rising up far too rapidly. She would have to ask around to see if any of her friends knew of anywhere higher to jump from. They would laugh at her childishness, but to them she was still a child, and they loved to indulge her.

Below, the River sparkled, its curved body growing fatter as she approached it. The darker blue of its deepest pool called to her like a lover ready to fold her into his arms, and tears fell through her laughter. In her blurred vision, the River became a spiral of blue, curling around a plain brown shell. Lost. She had lost it, so long ago, and with it she’d lost her lover’s embrace. As she hit the water with explosive force, bones broke, bruises blossomed like tulips at dawn, and the piece of Fruit she had been clutching floated away from her limp fingers.

By the riverbank, a tall Tree swayed in the gusty breeze, scattering out a flurry of dry leaves. A little while later, after the Sentinel had been found by her friends and had tasted life again, a silver branch cracked and

Excerpt

The wagon looked deserted. Kara had watched all morning. No one had come or gone from it. The Romani might have claimed Tony from the Sidhe, but none among them cared for him. Heck, Sveta wouldn’t even say his name. Only now, looking more closely at the wagon, Kara noted various charms had been hung from any available protrusion and symbols to contain evil likewise marked wherever the carving allowed. None of them held power that Kara could see. What the Rom did not seem to grasp is that charms guarding against evil already decorated the wagon. The symbols carved when the vardo was made were imbued with mage power. Old and faded, but still strong.
If Tony were evil, he never could have entered the damned wagon, to begin with.
Anger kindled hot and heavy in her breast. Tony was a victim. Foolish, perhaps. A delinquent who unwittingly invited the trouble that had been visited upon him, most certainly. But nothing about him as a person was evil. Kara knew this. Intimately. She had seen evil, been touched by it. Banished it. Destroying Olcas and his brothers had been a good start to keeping her vow to Granddame Rose, but it wasn’t enough when Tony’s spirit remained shackled. Not when his own people had clearly cast him out in all but deed.
Time to get to work.
She returned to the wagon she shared with Sveta and her young sons and gathered what cleaning supplies she could find, leaving a twenty on the table. When she stepped back outside, Beag Scath appeared at her feet. The fierce scowl on the sprite’s face reflected her own heart. Together they crossed the camp to the ancient-looking vardo where Rose’s grandson was housed. Kara knocked. No one answered, but the ill-latched door opened beneath her hand. Stale, musty air wafted out, causing Kara to cough as she peered within. The interior was dark as twilight, and nothing moved. In the faint light, she spied a man-shaped form huddled on the far bunk beneath a moth-eaten blanket. Part of her marveled at how he’d folded his 5’10” frame so small; most of her fumed at his living conditions.
Kara set Quicksilver and her supplies beside the door and stepped inside. She opened the two shutters at either end to let in fresh air, and then returned outside to deal with the exterior of the wagon. It took several minutes and no small amount of clambering by herself and Beag Scath to strip away most of the charms. Those left had been crudely painted on and would need to be scrubbed off. Still, it was a start. Squaring her shoulders and setting her jaw, she pivoted and headed for the communal fire at the center of the camp. Without a word to anyone, but challenge in her gaze, she dumped the charms into the flames and returned to Tony’s vardo.
There was not much else she could do about the condition of the wagon, but she would not give up on the man inside.
Returning to the main camp she approached the nearest vardo where one of the women, Susan Simko, prepared a meal. The herb-laden aroma of stewed lamb and vegetables set Kara’s stomach rumbling.
“Please, may I have a portion?” Kara asked, respectful, but determined, holding the woman’s gaze, daring her to look away.
“Mizhak,” Susan muttered as she spat into the dirt, her gaze clearly on Tony’s wagon. There was no doubt of her meaning.
“No,” Kara answered, her tone polite, but forceful. “Broken, not wicked. Family.”
She had no doubt the woman understood her words…and her determination.
Spitting again, Susan glared but shoved a smooth wooden bowl in Kara’s direction before disappearing into her wagon, slamming the door behind her. Holding the bowl with one hand, Kara took up the ladle hanging over the cook pot with the other and scooped out a single modest portion of the savory stew before hanging up the ladle again.
“Thank you,” she called out to the woman inside before carefully carrying the meal back to Tony’s wagon. When she reached her destination, she looked back only to see Susan not only dump out the remainder of the meal but throw both the pot and ladle away. Kara frowned and felt the bite of guilt deep in her belly. The Rom were proud people, without much in the way of worldly goods. Kara had forgotten they had very strong beliefs. And superstitions. She would not make the same mistake again. Tonight, she would ask Sveta what arrangements had been made to meet Tony’s needs, while allowing the others in the caravan to feel protected.
Mentally pushing up her sleeves, she went inside.
The bundle on the bed had cocooned tighter.
Kara set the bowl down on a massive wooden spindle that had been bolted to the floor as a table. She then moved to the bed and gently pulled the scratchy woolen blanket away.
Tony’s head whipped up, his face drawn and pale, framed by dark, unruly curls that had started to grow out of the neat style he’d worn in New York. He glared at her with dark, bloodshot eyes, dull and slightly glassy. As he realized who she was, he paled even further, his hand shaking as it reached up to tug the blanket back. She didn’t let him.
“Come on,” she said as if nothing were off at all. “Time to eat.”
Silently, he rose and did as she bid.

What do you do when the world’s greatest power has no conscience?

Two, not of blood, but joined in blood,

may conquer only as a selfless act of love.

-from The Prophecy of the Dancers of Silence

The illustrated dystopian science fiction epic fantasy BIRTH RIGHT TRILOGY depicts the first battles of a brutal war between humans, cyborgs, robots, and genetically enhanced beings. In the first book, BIRTH RIGHT: GALAK’S RISING, you are introduced to the Valki and Galak.

At the onset of a technological war that could destroy their race and the technology that made them superior, the genetically enhanced Valki traveled more than a century into the future.

In this new civilization, Galak, a cruel cyborg obsessed with creating his own race of superior beings, induces the remaining human feudal and native tribes to war against one another. To limit the Valki population, births are restricted to one per woman, unless they are twins. Galak demands that Valki teen twins compete for a Birthright, the right to have children—or be sterilized.

The courage of two young Valki women to resist Galak's law pits princes, kings, and mighty warriors against a merciless and powerful foe.

To save humanity, the girls, named only 99 and 100, and their allies must resist an opponent who has the field and technological advantages. Only those willing to sacrifice everything can defeat their enemies.

The BIRTH RIGHT TRILOGY explores the ethical implications of technology with adventure, romance, humor, and terror.

Kent Burles created the nineteen illustrations for GALAK’S RISING.

Excerpt

99 and 100 watch in horror from their upstairs window as two Galak warriors drag a girl toward the red doors of the Dall Building. Neither can guess what they are doing with her or what the young girl did to deserve arrest.

Below, the girl kicks and screams, then faints.

The G warriors shrug, and then pick her up and carry her inside the wooden building.

From their room, the girls look on, waiting for something to happen, but nothing does. The only movement below them is the dust sweeping across the dirt road.

99 and 100 look at one another, not believing what they have seen. Then, the girls smell the familiar scent of Lavora, a rare rose and lavender perfume, and turn to face their grandmother, Crystal.

Crystal’s forehead is fraught with concern. “Girls, what have you been doing?”

The two 14-year old girls cling to Crystal. 99, the most outspoken, speaks. “Grandma, a girl was arrested and taken inside the Dall Building. She was our age!”

“Who took her?” Crystal smooths the simple cotton skirt over her slim frame. She knows before she asks, though, that it has to do with Galak. Everything evil does. Why did Galak have to follow them here?

100 answers now. “The G Warriors. Were they kidnapping her?” Crystal pulls the girls closer. She hasn’t felt this frightened since she left Darissa da Vinci in 2071. “We’re not to interfere with them, dears. They work under Galak’s orders.”

“Who is Galak?” 99 asks as she brushes a long wisp of dark hair away from her face. If he’s important, she ought to know.

Crystal looks from 99 to 100, uncertain what their mother, Sila, would have her say.

About the Author

Barbara Frances has plenty of stories and a life spent acquiring them. Growing up Catholic on a small Texas farm, her childhood ambition was to become a nun. In ninth grade she entered a boarding school in Our Lady of the Lake Convent as an aspirant, the first of several steps before taking vows. On graduation, however, she passed up the nun’s habit for a college degree in English and Theatre Arts. Her professors were aghast when she declined a PhD program in order to become a stewardess, but Barbara never looked back. “In the Sixties, a stewardess was a glamorous occupation.” Her career highlights include dating a very gentlemanly Chuck Berry and “opening the bar” for a planeload of underage privates on their way to Vietnam. Marriage, children, school teaching and divorce distracted her from storytelling, but one summer she and a friend coauthored a screenplay. “I never had such fun! I come from a family of storytellers. Relatives would come over and after dinner everyone would tell tales. Sometimes they were even true.” The next summer Barbara wrote a screenplay solo. Contest recognition, an agent and three optioned scripts followed but, weary of fickle producers and endless rewrites, she turned to novels. Shadow’s Way is her third book. Her first, Lottie’s Adventure, is aimed at young readers. Her second, Like I Used To Dance, is a family saga set in 1950’s rural Texas. Barbara’s fans can be thankful she passed up convent life for one of stories and storytelling. She and her husband Bill live in Austin, Texas.
