Love Story Trilogy

Romance, Contemporary Romance

Date Published: 8/6/2021

When Panthea Snow loses her family in a horrific car crash, she needs something to keep her going. She decides to replace one family with another and signs up as a mail order bride to a man living in the far north in Alaska. When she arrives, however, she realizes she can’t go through with it but is stuck in River Ice, Alaska until the snow melts in a few weeks.

She meets Paden Winters and is drawn to him despite his moodiness and ill temper. As she gets to know him, she realizes they are both dealing with issues of healing and concealing pain. Only Paden deals with it by cutting himself for sexual satisfaction.

Can a woman who has an abnormal fear of blood and a man who cuts himself ever find happiness? Or are some pains too deep to overcome?

Excerpt

And then déjà vu happened. The door opened, a gust of cold wind came in, and all of Thea’s nerves came instantly alive. She knew, without turning around, that the man from the night before had just walked in.

I’ll be right there, Paden,” Miki called out.

Paden. His name is Paden.

You gonna be back tomorrow to keep me company?” Miki asked her, jolting her back to her senses.

I’d love to. How much do I owe you for lunch and the pot of coffee, Miki?”

Miki waved the offer away. “It was nice to have a girl in here to talk to.”

Then thank you.”

My pleasure.”

Thea hopped off the bar stool. “I guess I’ll see you tomorrow, but I will insist on paying.”

Very well. If you hold on for a minute, let me take care of Paden and then I’ll walk you to the hotel,” she said as she wiped her hands on a towel and poured a cup of black coffee.

You don’t have to escort me,” Thea protested. “It’s not that far.”

Yeah, but it’s dark and there’s a storm starting. Just wait.”

She tapped Thea’s hand before walking to the back corner where the man, Paden, sat. She watched as Miki sat the mug of coffee before him and then nodded as he gave his order. Though his face was turned toward Miki, those grass green eyes stayed focused on Thea.

Hello,” she said turning toward him after Miki had walked into the kitchen.

Hello,” he answered, though his tone wasn’t engaging.

He eyed her up and down, pausing on her hair and her Ugg boots. A mocking sort of smile twisted his lips, and he took a drink of his coffee.

You don’t like my boots?”

Let me guess. You saw the word boot and thought it seemed appropriate for minus thirty degree weather.”

It’s not that cold out,” she protested, stung by his disdain.

It will be. Didn’t you read your Alaskan Frommers Guide, Princess?” he taunted.

Thea frowned at his derision, wondering why such a handsome man was so rude. She decided she didn’t like him. He made her extremely uncomfortable. He simply stared at her, making her nervous for some reason, so she jumped off her seat and headed for the door. She grabbed her coat, hurrying out of the diner and into the icy wind. She struggled to put on her coat, scarf, and hat before she froze. Unused to such frigid wind, Thea came to realize how quickly hypothermia could settle in.

You little fool,” came a harsh voice. Gloved hands came out of nowhere to bundle her up. “You can freeze to death in minutes out here!”

Thea’s teeth were chattering too much for her to say anything. She looked up through her lashes at Paden, very aware that the strange reaction she’d had while looking at him in the diner hadn’t dissipated with the cold.

Come on,” he growled and took her arm.

About The Author

I grew up in Missouri and began writing at a very young age after being influenced by my mother's very naughty romance novels. I like writing about the very ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors or corporate high-rollers. I try to write characters who aren't cookie cutters and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box.

Four close friends, a beach, a fire, a trip to remember

"We're ready to take flight on our next big adventure, supplies packed, minds clear…The air is charged with sherbet-zing anticipation. We’re in formation. Ecstatic motion. Screaming down the hill towards the beach."

Everyone has secrets. Some are darker than others. Ethel, Isaac, Moana, and Henry are about to embark on their last psychedelic adventure together before Moana leaves for Australia

Each of the four has something soul-scarring to hide, something they’ve vowed to take to their graves. But when the psilocybin kicks in, psychological doors spring open and all past and present lives are laid bare.

Will the experience bring them closer to each other and closer to understanding themselves, or will it devastate them?

Content warning: contains strong language, use of psilocybin mushrooms and other substances, trauma themes.

Ethel

The library is busy for a Friday. The steady flow is punctuated by the tension-induced banter of tired week-day staff who just want the weekend to come. Celeste bustles over to me – I always think of her movements in this way, probably because of the high heels and tight skirts that inhibit her movement. I’m shelving romances. She brushes lint from my shoulder. I try to hold back the instinct to recoil. My smile is a grimace.

“What are you up to this weekend?”

Usually I say something like “reading” or “cleaning the house” because that’s a usual weekend thing, and Celeste responds with “aw” or “sad” or “lame” and looks pityingly at me. Her idea of fun is going into town, barely clad, and drinking until she falls over. This time I try a different approach, just to see how she reacts: “I’m getting wasted with my friends at the beach.”

“Wow, Ethel.” Celeste puts the back of her palm up to my forehead, a playful-mocking gesture. “You feeling okay? I’ve never heard you say such a thing!”  She heads towards a customer at the counter, but pauses, looks back and squints, “I thought you didn’t drink.”

I don’t. Hopefully she won’t start inviting me out clubbing under the impression that I do. Drinking and I don’t mix well. Alcohol makes me nauseous if I have any more than a drink or two. I continue returning the heavily thumbed romances to their shelves. These ones are getting old. They’ll be out on the $1 rack soon and we’ll replace them with newer pulp. Their yellowing pages and the smell of cardboard and vanilla give them away. These books with their formulaic plots and two-dimensional characters don’t mean anything to me, but I hold them up and inhale anyway.

Real books have smells that eBooks can never replace. The process of the paper breaking down, slowly, releases a compound similar in structure to vanillin. So that is what I’m inhaling: the smell of books dying.

I push my empty trolley back towards the counter. A familiar foreboding figure awaits, her back straight as a ruler, grey hair pulled into a tight knot. Agatha Millen. I contemplate going into the back room where we catalogue books, just to escape her, but I see Celeste has gotten there before me. Agatha turns her head and I instinctively want to duck behind the biographies. It’s too late. She’s seen me.

“Excuse me.” Her tone is overbearing, even when her words are polite. She beckons with her bony fingers.

“How may I help you?” I try to smile.

“Oh, it’s you, the clumsy one. Well, don’t dither about. I need to track down the first edition of my father’s History of Paraguay. Of course, the family has several copies, but I know there’s one in the library system and I want to ensure it is returned to us before you toss it out like those poor sods outside.”

This is a fairly common Agatha request. She comes in every week asking for obscure volumes written by her family and acquaintances. Her unpleasantness forms a kind of parody of herself, reminding me of the judgemental elderly neighbours in my childhood who asked invasive questions about my broken shoes, my messy hair, my mother. I flinch but try not to show it. I can’t find the book on the system, anyway. It must have been tossed already. “I’ll look into it for you.”

Agatha fixes me with one of her piercing stares, emitting a kind of psychic toxin from behind her spectacles. I feel my soul withering. Thank God it’s almost the weekend.

INTRODUCTION

Many of us have dreams and goals that we want to manifest in our lives, but we fall short of achieving them. Some fizzle out and die because of a lack of action. Sometimes our dreams and desires fester inside, making us angry, bitter, and confused.

It usually isn’t a lack of desire or motivation that prevents us from reaching these dreams and goals. In fact, it’s sometimes even more frustrating for the Type A personalities, the ones who believe we need to try harder, dig deeper, find the right blueprint and follow it precisely, even perfectly.

Society tells us that everything has a formula, and that if we do our part to complete certain checklists, we are all but guaranteed success. Master the concepts of kindergarten, move on to first grade. Get a certain degree to land the career we want. Even our personal lives have checklists, defining for us what constitutes a successful career, family and or, spiritual life.

The trouble is, that formulaic approach often fails us and leaves us wondering why we still feel unsatisfied or unhappy, why we haven’t reached our goals, or why we grab onto something for a moment, only to watch it slip away once again.

Something is missing. Underneath all of this, we need the right mindset – and that starts with knowing who we really are.

Our potential stretches far beyond the formulas and restrictive rules we follow. It isn’t until we get creative and think about our capabilities and talents instead of those prescribed formulas that we truly succeed. This is what Steve Jobs did when he dropped out of school to start Apple. Jobs discarded the formula even when everyone around him said he was crazy, because he knew in his soul who he was and what he was capable of.

It took me years to learn this lesson. I lived by the myth of formulas and checklists well into adulthood, using them in my career, in relationships, in my health, even in my faith.

In my mid-twenties, someone called me fat and not long after, I went all-out to lose weight. I went to the gym and hired a personal trainer, but I still didn’t drop the pounds. Later, heading into my thirties, I started to understand that it wasn’t about going through the motions of exercising and dieting; I understood that I had to dig into my mind about food.

Some of you might relate to my experience as a first-generation Haitian American raised by parents who wound up in an “Immigrant Time Warp.” This phenomenon describes a situation in which immigrants are locked into the social norms of their native countries at the time they left. Despite living in America, some immigrant parents raise their children as if they were still

“back home.” I say this with respect. I wouldn’t change a thing about my upbringing. It made me resilient. This involves a delicate balance of honoring your native culture while still embracing the positive aspects of the Western American culture.

Food had come to symbolize many things in my life, and none of it was about fuelling my body. I had internalized messages of scarcity from generations who remembered what it was like to not know where their next meal would come from (so eat as much as you can when you have it). Food was comforting after a bad day at school. Food was celebration – the delicious puff pastry called Pate’ that’s made with lard, the dish called Griot that’s made of pork double fried in bacon.

Food was tradition and love too. I might insult a family member if I turned down their food, or someone might tease me with, “What kind of a Haitian are you?” if I declined the red beans and rice.

Even as my conscious mind worked to follow a formula to lose weight, my subconscious carried messages that told me to “eat more” … and the subconscious message always wins out.

I thought for a while that I had conquered the weight loss goal and learned what I needed to learn about food, but that wound up an incomplete lesson. Although I had figured out some of my internal messages about food, I had not yet learned about the fallacies of formulas.

So, another message kicked in: Perfectionism.

I was an executive at a bank (following my career formula) and started working out three times a day: a three-mile run to my aunt’s house in the morning to join her for a mile-long walk, then a three-mile run back home; a workout at lunch; and another workout after work. I also counted calories obsessively, and I went from a Size 16 to a Size 4.

Once I had the weight loss formula, or what I thought was the formula, I was going to do it to the best of my ability. I carried this mentality into my career, my family life, and my religion. Can you relate?

It all came crashing down in the form of an abusive relationship and burnout at work. By then, I had studied the Law of Attraction (LOA) and understood that I had attracted a lot of this to me.

In my downfall, I realized who I really was and that I have the ability to change. I learned that there are more laws than the Law of Attraction, an insight that helped me reconcile the dichotomy regarding those experiences in our lives that we have not attracted. Like too many others, I had experienced trauma in my childhood. It was entirely out of my control and I could not say I had attracted it. But I COULD decide it wouldn’t be the thing that destroys me.

We are created in God’s image and likeness, which means we have an ability to create and to change who we are. I studied all types of religions, philosophies, and modalities. I learned about the ways our energy can be blocked and held in our bodies when we experience trauma. And until you deal with your trauma, your desires and dream manifestation will be warped.

I studied and learned about my soul and had a spiritual awakening: we have a higher self that is trying to experience certain things in life.

We have contracts with other people in our lives, soul contracts. As I examined events in my life, I started to reframe them and think, “Maybe this is something my soul wants to experience.”

Today, I work as an intuitive counsellor and embrace my gifts for doing Akashic readings, Energy work like Reiki (to help balance the flow of blocked energies that affect our body and emotions). I help people deal with trauma and then find their soul’s purpose. I earned my MBA and am working toward a second master’s degree in counselling to help people with trauma.

If you have unresolved trauma, I’d like you to set this book aside and work on that first with a licensed therapist. This book won’t work for you, no amount of life coaching will work, if you still have deep unresolved trauma. That’s a process that involves intensive exploration into the past and layers to unravel and address.

How can you tell whether you have trauma? You still remember it, or it’s been the hindrance that prevents you from accomplishing a goal you’ve been working on for years. The trauma can be yours in this lifetime, it can be generational, or it can be carried over from a previous lifetime. It needs to be dealt with properly and cannot be ignored.

This book is for those in need of coaching.

It is divided into four sections that are meant to be read in sequence, with concepts that build upon one another. I will show you how to know who you are in order to create the life you want.

You’ll learn about the three layers of the mind and how our thoughts create; the difference between dreams and wishes; the power of our words; and you’ll receive structures and tools of creation. At the end, you’ll receive access to an accompanying workbook that will provide exercises to implement these ideas in your life.

This isn’t another formula, but a guide to your own awakening so that you can create the life you want.

Three thousand years ago the three races of Vinge, Human, Dak’or, and Fingalin, fled into space at the destruction of their planet. Now The Alliance between the three governments is at its breaking point. Between racial tensions caused by the elitist and wealthy Fingal trying to claim a divine right to rule, a deadly new quarantine-resistant plague that is sweeping through the primarily Drak’or outer colonies, and lack of funding and success in terraforming efforts, the treaty seems to be at an end. As people begin to turn to religion to save them, The Descendents, a powerful religious sect worshiping the Goddess Vyanna, readily fill the void.

Now the crew of a small mercenary vessel, captained by a man calling himself the devil, are on a relief mission to replace equipment for Deep Space Initiative Station 3122’s failed life support. Lieutenant Commander James Aiunys, the newest member, and tactical officer of the legendary crew is shocked when they are unexpectedly pulled out of hyperspace, and informed that the quarantine zone has been expanded to include the station. The mysterious Drak’or captain is undeterred. In a feat that seems more like magic than science, he turns the battle on its head, defeating one of the most powerful warships in the galaxy, leaving it paralyzed in space.

Upon their arrival however, the station is not what they had expected. The crew becomes concerned when they discover the station empty, an eerie resemblance to another station they had visited at the bequest of strange women with silver hair who smelled of apple blossoms.

When the power core fails during their investigation, The Captain is once again forced to do the impossible, leaving James with more questions than answers. With the government collapsing into chaos, the crew of The Shade find themselves on the run, caught in the middle of a sinister plot that will change the galaxy forever.

But there are darker shadows than the machinations of mortals lurking in the far corners of civilization. Brought face to face with their own humanity in a conflict older than the concepts of good and evil. They are forced to question everything they understood about themselves, religion, and even the very fabric of reality.

Excerpt

He stood on a long empty beach, white sand filling in the spaces between his toes, warm against the arches of his feet. A massive object, larger than the moon, with wings swiping out as if a menacing beast across the horizon, casting a shadow in the deep reds of Sunset.

The ocean began to pull back, until the rocky floor was exposed for more than eighty feet. The wall of water hung suspended in the air, a great wave waiting for a release that would never come. Light from the sun grew more intense, burning his exposed skin. The air became dry and bri le in his lungs, like sheets of ash blown from a fire. Breathing was painful.

“We have to find shelter.” He could not identify the owner of the voice, it was distant, indistinct.

A bright flash lit up the sky, drowning out the shadow cast by the ship, growing brighter as it hurtled across the expanse of space. He looked on in horror as four seconds later the plasma beam struck the atmosphere. Flames crawled through the sky as the beam racked from one horizon to the other, spreading outwards until the entire world was engulfed in an inferno. Molten rock spayed upwards from the impact, spraying lava thousands of feet into the sky. Screams filled the air as one after another streaks of plasma rocketed to the planet, followed by explosions of liquefied earth.

He spun around to gaze upon the demonic ship which had summoned such destruction.

But met only blackness. Red eyes glowed like embers out of the emptiness. The scent of ash heavy in the air.

A sound, barely a whisper, like an echo drifting in the nothingness,

“Zymo.”

“Dreku,” the voice was ethereal, it felt fuzzy in his ears, like an illusion you can’t make sense of.

“Seph,” electricity wrapped around his nerves and crawled through his body, something ancient and powerful awakening inside him.

“Zhemarah.” The word exploded in his mind, like a large rock being dropped into a still pool, consumed by the silence that followed.
